Seems the latest theft is a Van Gough.

7. This tends to be the trend these days, if not going directly to a private collection.

3. Black market
You sell it to some ultra-rich person who enjoys it in private.

And yes, there are people who will pay through the nose for the privilege.

9. Indeed.
If other laws don't apply to them, why would that one matter?

11. Sort of like Ebeneezer Scrooge, content to fondle his $$ in private...
Because they couldn't even show it to others or brag about owning it for fear of being caught--at least one would think. I suppose if you have enough $$ you may be able to do even that.

4. Usually with important pieces of art, the thefts tend to be private affairs. Usually a collector is
already waiting to add it to their "collection." There are only so many Van Goghs, Titians or Rembrandts in existence, and they are readily identifiable. Trying to steal and then sell a known art masterpiece on the open market, is the epitome of "stupid."

5. Probably sold before it was ever stolen..
People capable of such a theft have connections to move the merchandise..

8. Private collector who doesn't care about the legality of the item.
Sadly it will disappear forever into some private estate where some insanely rich person can solely admire the stolen work.

10. Those who covet famous works of art are notorious for
arranging for their stealthful acquisition and house them privately. They display them where only their sycophants and their presumed to be uneducated undocumented servants may view them exclusively.

Remember the astonishing systematic heists of the most treasured items in the Baghdad museum and how they had been housed in hermetically sealed glass that only a pro would have had the know-how and possess the appropriate tools to cut ?

Shows to go you.

There were ripplings of amazement at the proficiency of that heist.
