The Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO -- Dave "Mac" McElhatton, who was the voice of major San Francisco Bay area news stories for nearly 50 years, has died.

The Oakland native retired from anchoring KPIX-TV's "Eyewitness News" in 2000, after 25 years with the station. Before that, he worked for KCBS radio for 25 years as a morning-show personality and news director.

Among the major stories McElhatton covered were the 1978 assassination of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk, the 1989 earthquake and the 1993 murder of 12-year-old Polly Klaas.

In 2006, he was inducted into the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame.

1. One of the voices of my youth...!
He was quite generous on a station visit I made as a teenager, when exploring my own potential "future media" options...

6. Watching him on KPIX
was a big part of my childhood. My grandma was a real news junkie. (I guess that is where I get it from)

He will be missed.
