1. yes, they were, so then we have proof the bush tax cut did not work
The only spending money most families had was on credit cards. Then pay the credit cards by refinancing the house. The banks went along with this, do to the purposefully lax regulation of the banks. Then the Banks package the home loans up into bundles and sold them back to us as the "stable fund" in our 401K.

no government regulation of business for any reason, and the vaunted "trickle down" theory of the Reagan era. Look up Newt Gingrich's speeches from his heyday as Speaker of the House- the ideas that "the market is self regulating", that the government has no business regulating any business of corporations and that corporations should in effect make their own laws, and in turn be "regulated" by people voting with their investments or financial support, that maximum financial success is the only real and universal good.

The republican "ideas" led to this terrible depression, and they now think they have not gone far enough...
