Worried Neighbors Rescue 90 Cats from Condemned House

http://www.care2.com/causes/animal-welfare/blog/worried-neighbors-rescue-90-cats-from-condemned-house/

City officials in Albany, NY responded to a complaint over a foul odor, only to find that the smell was coming from an abaondoned house on Orange Street, where more than 90 cats and two Rottweilers were residing.

The city quickly moved to condemn the house after animal control rescued about two dozen cats, after which no one could legally return inside to get more.

Enter Orange Street Cats, a group of concerned citizens who couldn't let the welfare of the animals inside go, and resolved to rescue them before the building was demolished.

Rescuers got wind of the situation when the cats' caretaker brought 15 of the cats and two dogs to one of the team members and asked for help getting the remaining "handful" out, according to Diane Metz, one of the volunteers. That team member began calling all of the cat people she knew, who in turn called more and the team was born.

"They chose none of this, and deserve to find forever homes where they will be cherished and loved and cared for," said Metz.

Photos showing the conditions of the dilapidated building are pretty self explanatory as to why no one could turn a blind eye to the animals' plight.

1. "...after which no one could legally return inside to get more."
Yet they did anyway. Those horrible, terrible lawbreaking criminals.

Bless every single one of them.

Great story, disturbing pictures. Thanks for posting.

4. A-men -- we had a bust like this in my area several weeks ago and a local
non-profit no-kill shelter took in almost 50 cats altogether I think. They have all received medical treatment and many of them have already been adopted to good homes.

2. Geez, what kind of law
mandates that animals not be rescued before a house is demolished? That is just sick. Why would it be okay to bulldoze a house knowing there were animals inside?

6. Laws prevent people from entering condemned buildings so they don't get hurt.
However I am glad in this case that the rescuers went in anyway.

3. Not much better than vermin
Saw an ad on TV last night that says one cat can result in over 240,000 cats being born if it's not neutered. I hope they at least neuter all of these ones.

5. That's cold. Of course they neuter and spay them - it's part of routine medical care for rescued
cats. I adopted two kittens a few months ago who were born to a feral mother who had been abandoned at some point. They are not vermin - they are sweet and loving companions and my life is better for having them in it.

Preferring cats over humans...

Cat got your brain?
A common parasite spread by cats might affect your personality. Here's how to protect kitty—and yourself.
By Jane Borden

If you're a man and you've been feeling antisocial lately, it could simply be the weather. If you're a woman and are growing randier through the years, you might just be blossoming sexually. But if you also own one of the estimated 3 million cats in New York City or have a taste for raw meat, you might be harboring a human-behavior-altering parasite called Toxoplasma gondii. The protozoan parasite typically moves between rodents and cats, but humans can become hosts when we come in contact with infected feline fecal matter. Approximately 60 million Americans are estimated to be living with the organism. And once you have it, you have it for life.

They are truly disgusting creatures that should be controlled like vermin. They are what they eat.

13. "Not much better than vermin" I always have a problem with that kind of talk
it just sounds all wrong and heartless.

I agree with neutering, I think that's good.
