Swiss campaign for referendum on death penalty begins (BBC)
Campaigners who want to bring back the death penalty in Switzerland can begin a process that may force a referendum on its return, the government says.

The campaigners have until 24 February to collect the 100,000 signatures necessary to force a popular vote on the subject, it has been announced.

Campaigners want murder involving sexual abuse, particularly of children, to be punishable by death.

Switzerland abolished the death penalty for civilian criminal cases in 1942.

The campaigners say execution is a "fair" punishment for murder involving sexual abuse.

2. You can have a referendum on anything here.
The death penalty won't be reinstated in Switzerland.

5. Glad to hear it. The full article makes it sound like the courts ...
would not likely find it constitutional. Wouldn't it be nice to have a Supreme Court that actully regarded the Constitution as anything more than a fig leaf?

4. The guy who launched this initiative
just recalled it. All he wanted to do is a PR stunt, or, most likely, not to look like an idiot in the long term.
