The Falwell you never knew:
I have to admit, I thought I was at the wrong eulogy when I read it:

LAKELAND - Within two months of making one of his most controversial public comments, the Rev. Jerry Falwell paid a visit to Lakeland.

In November 2001, shortly after saying that the Sept. 11 attacks had occurred because feminists, homosexuals and abortion-rights groups had caused God to "lift the curtain" of divine protection of America, Falwell spoke to the pastors' conference of the Florida Baptist Convention, which met at First Baptist Church at the Mall.

He told his listeners that his 12-year-old grandson, upon hearing the remark, told him he'd made a mistake, prompting Falwell to apologize. The audience laughed appreciatively.

That was typical of Falwell, said the Rev. Jay Dennis, senior pastor of First Baptist. When he made outrageous comments, he admitted it.

1. The question is
Did he come to realize it was a mistake because of the public backlash and the effect it had on his income? Or was it because he had come to realize that his position concerning such people was wrong?

Sorry to say. You nor I nor anyone here at DU knew the man Jerry Falwell. We only at best knew a public display of a certain persona that was attributed to Jerry Falwell. I have nothing good or bad to say about the man Jerry Falwell. I never knew him. The only Jerry Falwell I ever knew was the image presented on TV.

3. The same thing will be said of Rush Limbaugh, when his day comes.
We'll be reading about how his friends said he was misunderstood and how he secretly confided that he detested the things he said publicly, but privately, he was a really nice guy who gave back to his community.

So, the question is, why are they prostituting themselves to say such hateful things, and why are their listeners so eager to eat it up?

2. Wow
My only surprise at that article is that "rev" dennis, a "senior Pastor" of a baptist church thought that what falwell said was outrageous. He voiced the thoughts in the minds and hateful hearts of baptists coast to coast.

4. Why are we just hearing about their disagreeing with him now?
Did they talk to him privately, and kept their opinions from reaching a more public forum? Why?

Why did they keep Strom Thurmond's secret for so long?

6. He ran liquor during the prohibition
That was before he found Jesus, though. I guess religion turned out to be more profitable than liquor!

17. Alternate realities.
There are some people in society that really just eat up the whole package. Wear a tie and suddenly your crimes become a legitimate career.
