Paid Political Bloggers' Union Joins to Fight Pay Cuts - Threatens Strike

by Ephraim Messenger

Washington - August 25, 2010 - Even though they're often on opposite sides of the political battle, paid bloggers from both the Republican and Democratic camps showed solidarity yesterday in a joint meeting of the American Association of Paid Political Bloggers Untied. The meeting, held at a DC-area Starbucks, ended in a vote authorizing a strike if pay cuts demanded by major political organizations were not reversed.

Spokesperson, Chad Reed, speaking for the AAPPBU, said, "We're tired of being treated as second-class journalists, and are not going to accept the cuts in the chump change already offered by these political organizations. We perform a crucial service to the internet community by communicating the wishes and talking points of our political conspiracy leaders." When asked about a possible strike, Reed made a surprising declaration: "We'll cripple the online discussion forums if we withdraw our services. Major discussion forums will have to close down. Few people realize that almost every word written in these forums originates with our handlers and that we're just passing the talking points along. It is estimated by our media analysts that 72.35% of all words on political forums are generated by our efforts. If we're gone, all that will be left will be useless flame wars."

When we contacted James Robinson, owner of the racism-based teabagger forum, Free Republic, he said, "If these $%^&8)@ @$$#@+$ go on strike, I may be out on the street with a cup, panhandling for eating money." When we attempted to contact Ariana Huffington of Huffinton Post, a blog of uneven quality, more or less on the left end of the spectrum, staffers told us she was permanently unavailable to labornews4UnMe.com. A Firedoglake spokeperson simply blew smoke in our researcher's face.

One thing's certain, though: While these paid bloggers don't get along on line, they are eager to come together when the issue is money. Will they follow through on their threats to strike? Will the Internet essentially shut down? Will discussion end? Only time will tell this tale.

But recs/unrecs don't matter, anyhow. Only readers and replies matter.

9. Huh?
That's not what my blogger employment form says.

It says that the readers and the cumulative recs and unrecs are what my pay is based on.

What company do you work for?

8. Well, I like Dunn Bros. and Caribou Coffee.
They're lots more common here in Minnesnowta than Starbucks. Good wireless, too, and you don't have to speak another language to order a medium coffee, either.

20. You have a point, there. I hear the weather is starting to cool down
in Playa del Carmen. I could use a nice vacation, for sure. Maybe this strike business isn't such a bad idea...Let me check this out with Chad. I'll see what he thinks, and get back to you. You may just have something there.

One of 'em falls on your head, and it's going to smart some. Better wear a hard hat on that hammock, I think. I think my union hard hat is somewhere in the hall closet.

23. Pretty funny
I've been blogging for three years, and never made a dime off it. I'd love to see the detractors take on blogging; they wouldn't last a week. After all, I do things the old-fashioned way: I don't print unsourced material, for instance.

It's unfortunate that the news and opinions assimilated daily through well-known lefty blogs (and the hard work of people like Joshua Micah Marshall and Jane Hamsher,) is so disdained here.
