My son and his wife, who live in Nebraska, are in the process of adopting a newborn baby in Florida. Before they could take the baby home from the hospital, they had to sign statements attesting to their hetero-ness. When they asked why they had to sign such statements, the reason given them was that gay adoption is illegal in Florida, and that "the hospital needs to make sure everything's on the up and up." My son said to me, "That we happen to be straight is beside the point. Why should any government - state or otherwise - have the right to dictate what the sexual orientation of adoptive parents must be? It's ridiculous, and it's WRONG! Things have got to change!" I agreed.
What can we do about it?

Stupid is basically a school issue and GLSEN is spearheading the de-stupidization process nationally.
Short-term: LTTEs, writing your reps, supporting progressive candidates in Fla and Nebraska.
All the usual stuff.
Congratulations!
