Jersey lost the federal grant (Race to the Top) b/c Governor changed answers to suit radio talk host
Edited on Wed Aug-25-10 11:02 AM by no_hypocrisy
Well, kinda. B/c the Governor was focusing on appeasing a talk show host, he missed the obvious: He didn't answer a five-point question correctly.

http://jerseyjazzman.blogspot.com/2010/08/heckuva-job-scundlie.html

Here's the chronology: Schundler and the NJEA agreed on the initial application. But then Jim Gearhart, morning blowhard at NJ 101.5, decided he didn't like the idea of Christie's administration collaborating with the enemy (yes, in his mind, the teachers union is the enemy), and went off on a rant about the governor.

Apparently, when a radio DJ says "Jump!," Christie says, "Off of which bridge?", because Christie forced Schundler to rewrite the application at the last minute to make it more to Gearhart's liking. And then called the DJ to beg forgiveness.

Apparently, that last-minute rewrite didn't catch the fatal flaw. So now NJ loses out on the money because Chris Christie needed to appease a radio personality.

And, one JUST as corrupt as Corazine.

I had the displeasure of being introduced to him last year by a superior in a semi-social setting, so I had to shake his hand. UGH.

4. Even more corrupt.
Ever wonder how Christie survived the Federal prosecutors purge in 2005? Because he DID do politically motivated investigations and prosecutions that Rove ordered, which all came to nothing.

And, look at his staff. Corrupt legal deals back for at least a decade.

20. You have a window to start collecting before the one year mark.
The petitions can't be filed before the one-year mark.

I'm sure there's detailed information somewhere online.

7. Ugh....so mad about this....
And worse yet, the big NJ paper (the Star Ledger) had an editorial claiming that our failure to get the grant was the teacher's union's fault.

8. Yep - saw it on
Ed Potosnak's FB update. Ed's running in 7th District against Lance . . . Scientist, former high school teacher, small business owner -

He's doing the best he can to lump his opponent in with Christie. ;-) Past few days have been about how much NJ paid into the Fed and how little (Lance point blank admits) Lance brought back home.

I know the pundits talk about a Republican Take Over - but in NJ???? There's a Dem Incumbent whose neck is on the line but there are people in the 7th District that are pissed off over Christie's enactment of his campaign promises and I have FOUR of those Republicans that voted for Christie fired up and ready to go vote for Potosnak.

All politics (even down in Trenton) is local. :-)

Sincerest condolences from a former Jersey Citian who once called Bret a pig, to his face, while on his way down the escalator at Journal Square PATH.

13. Update: This is getting good. N.J. Assembly speaker orders hearing on 'Race to the Top' application
error

http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2010/08/nj_assembly_speaker_orders_hea.html

Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver (D-Essex) has ordered a hearing on the Christie administration's error that helped sink the state's chances for up to $400 million in a competitive federal education grant called Race to the Top.

“With nearly half of a billion dollars lost because of human error, this hearing is an absolute must,” Oliver said in a statement. “The state, our taxpayers, and most of all our children deserve answers from the administration as to how such an egregious blunder could have been overlooked with so much as stake.”

Oliver did not give a time or date for the meeting of the Assembly Appropriations Committee.

23. You should be thankful that NJ "lost out,"
unless the policies that Duncan is looking for have already been enacted. Selling public education down the river for the chance to compete for more funding, so that a state can fund harmful policy, is a bad deal all the way around.

I'm grateful that my state has chosen not to compete. Our schools and students will be the winners.
