Putting a point on it
Edited on Wed Aug-25-10 02:01 PM by Kurt_and_Hunter
I have tried to hone the "marriage vs. civil union = separate but equal" argument because it comes up a lot.

But another DUer, in a reply to a thread I think might be long gone, put a rhetorical point on it so perfect that I feel it should be offered on its own (paraphrased).

"White people should have marriages. Black people should have civil unions that confer the same rights/responsibilities as marriage."

Does that statement outrage the reader? Why? The two confer precisely the same rights... there is no formal legal injury.

But it does outrage the reader because every reader knows that the supposedly meaningless distinction is an intentional mark of difference, exclusion and presumptive inferiority.

2. I confess. When I first heard about the battle I thought 'let them get Civil Unions instead of

married, why not go for the rights instead of fighting over a word?'
I thought we were fighting for the rights denied some people because of their sexual orientation,
I thought if we could give them the rights without getting into a fight over a word with some bigots what would be the harm?

I WAS WRONG this is about
fighting for EQUAL RIGHTS for EVERYONE

Look what happens when the bigots 'win':
In Texas they passed a 'defense of marriage amendment";
That amendment stated that marriage is between one man and one woman.
It did not name that one man or that one woman but it did state that
The State of TEXAS does not recognize ANYTHING the same as or similar to marriage .

In order to deny equality to everyone the State of Texas does not recognize the marriage of ANYONE.

So now my opinion is "If the Bastids don't want to recognize EVERYONE's equal rights call them what they are"
Bigots and if they are from Texas Bastids.
