http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=9002323&mesg_id=9003539

Does anyone think they are being shipped BACK to these guys, or that they wound up in the garbage? And if by chance 100 million will be actually returned (by what means boggles the mind) does anyone actually believe the people responsible will actually destroy the eggs?

Now we know

Eggs from suspect farms will be processed, sold

Eggs from the two Iowa farms at the heart of a salmonella scare could still make it into your shopping basket — but not in the way you'd think.

The producers responsible for a recall of some 550 million potentially tainted eggs have found another outlet for the inventory that just keeps coming: They’ll turn them into liquid eggs used in everything from cookies and cakes to egg substitutes and pet food.

Patricia El-Hinnawy, a spokeswoman for the federal Food and Drug Administration, confirmed Wednesday that Wright County Eggs and Hillandale Farms will send ongoing supplies of eggs from laying hens to so-called "breaking plants" to be processed and sold.

FDA and animal science experts say the eggs will be pasteurized, a process that indisputably kills the salmonella bacteria responsible for infections that have sickened at least 1,300 people.

"We can be confident that the pasteurized eggs are safe," said Dr. Theresia Lavergne, an associate professor of animal sciences at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.

And officials from the U.S. Department of Agriculture say that lots of the eggs suspected in the outbreak will be segregated from other eggs and subjected to a new, second inspection to ensure that no salmonella remains.

2. It wouldn't surprise if I learned those eggs were resold to food manufacturers and became
part of cakes, cookies, breads, etc.

4. Those eggs will be pasteurized, so they should be safe.
Should be.

5. If they make them safe, wouldn't it make more sense to use them rather than throw them away?

6. it may be possible to use them in pasteurized egg products
which would kill the salmonella (not that I am an expert)

*Egg Beaters comes to mind as one such product.

7. The same way that fish from the Gulf is now "safe".
I'm thinking of Erin Brockovich, in the scene where they are confronting the power company bigwigs.

She has glasses of water in front of them, and invites them to have a drink.

When they lift the glasses, she informs them it is from their (polluted) land.

I suggest we do the same. "You first."

10. Nope, you're wrong
There's really no way to get chemical pollution and heavy metals out of fish flesh. Once it's there it's there forever.

However, it's pretty easy to gt rid of salmonella. It's a bacteria, and high heat destroys it; pasteurization really will do the trick.

12. You're wrong for misreading what I said.
I was talking about TRUST.

TRUSTING that "them" saying it is "safe" means it is "safe".

"Safe" and "Trust" is what I was talking about.

I think I actually was clear about that.

8. Given the raw milk threads on DU...
there are a fair number of DUers who think that Louis Pasteur was some sort of wizard, and they don't trust his black magic.

9. Yet another reason to not eat processed foods.
It is not just the MSG and weird food colorings and preservatives.

But do you really think the 99 cent frozen lasagna has premium beef in its tomato sauce, and premium eggs in its noodles?

11. If they're pasteurized, what's the problem?
Seems like making lemonade out of lemons to me.

14. What should they do with all of those millions of recalled Ford and GM vehicles?
Throw them in the junkyard, never to be recycled?
