Scott Mountain Fire blows up this afternoon (DIAL UP WARNING)
Edited on Thu Aug-26-10 12:15 AM by DemoTex
The Scott Mountain Fire in the Sisters Wilderness blew up twice this afternoon. It was 300 acres yesterday, 600 this morning, and who-knows-what now. I’ll check the Inciweb early tomorrow for the new acreage.

The Scott Mountain Fire’s pyrocumulus dwarfed the Three Sisters, which stand at about 10,000 feet. I’d guess the smoke billowed to about 35,000 feet in the first plume. The second, possibly a spot fire run amok, was not quite as high.

The drift smoke and ash rolled in on me at about 8 PM PDT. I was able to get some good photos with drift smoke coloration in the sky.

Scott Mountain Fire blows up mid-afternoon on 8-25-2010. That is North Sister on the left at an elevation of 10,038 feet.

Scott Mountain Fire drift smoke colored the sky tonight.

The drift smoke also colored the eastern sky.

Heavy drift smoke and ash approaches my lookout tower from the northwest.

Mount Thielsen to the southwest veiled in drift smoke from Scott Mountain.

The Crater Buttes and beyond in striations of Scott Mountain drift smoke.

1. My dear DemoTex!
Wow! Those colors are so surreal! They absolutely look painted on the sky!

I am in awe.

Thank you!

Stay safe, please...

2. Woah!
Beautiful and scary pictures.

Stay safe DemoTex.

BTW, did you ever find out what was scaring your Good Puppy Dog a while ago?

4. We are fairly sure it was a cougar.
But the deer are now back (after a five week absence). That is very good!

5. Stunning photos!
Thanks for checking in, Mac. Thanks, also, to your camera equipment. Kinda beyond my pay grade, lol, but I'm thankful you have the knowledge and equipment to give us such a graphic perspective.

6. Amazing photos!
I was just out that way last week, backpacking with my four-year-old on Square Lake, in the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness. The area was a part of the Booth Burn of the B & B Complex Fires of 2003. It was most interesting to spend some time in such an area.

Here's a few pics, in case you're actually that bored: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kemmerer/sets/72157624677530827/with/4924851959/

Take care.

Cheers!

I noticed tankers flying overhead all day and the fire still seems to be growing. Last public update it's still 0% contained. Have you heard any current info over the radio?

14. Are there any population centers nearby?
I'm new to the Cascades (Seattle area), so forgive my ignorance. I know that fire is an essential part of forest restoration, but out of control burns can be devastating to both civilization and wilderness. Is this in, or threatening, any protected wilderness areas?
