And what's sad is how he had to lie to the public for years because of how the Republicans treat homosexuals.

I wish Ken Mehlman nothing but years and years of happiness and the hopes that one day he might benefit from the hard work of progressives out there fighting for his equal rights when it comes to love and marriage.

2. I could be right there with you if it weren't for the fact that Mehlman
was a very active participant in how Republicans treat homosexuals. It remains to be seen how committed he is to advancing gay rights.

He's also a man known for helping the Republican Party orchestrate a 2004 election and a 2006 election that were deeply rooted in anti-gay sentiments. Witness statewide ballot measures in various states that banned gay marriage. Witness President George W. Bush's support for a federal constitutional amendment banning gay marriage in the 2005 State of the Union. Witness a White House that squashed hate crimes legislation, and one that wouldn't allow its representative at the United Nations to sign onto a resolution condemning the criminalization of homosexuality.

The list goes on and on. For all of the anti-gay work that Mehlman oversaw as head of the RNC and leader of the Bush/Cheney campaign, he's a bit sorry. As Mehlman noted, his coming out process has been a difficult process, and he wasn't comfortable until recently admitting that he's openly gay.

3. you straight party/Obama loyalists just love this shit!! you trip
over yourselves to post this gay republican stuff multiple times over and over so you can crow about how GOOOOD teh gays have it with DEMS. We hear you and it's obvious what you imply! :D

and NO i don't think the DEMS are nearly AS bad but one would think there would be a higher standard to strive for other than, "not as bad". "Not as bad" is still very bad when the bad is as bad as the Republicans. We gays are ok with you all until we get too loud and disturb you folks at the front of the bus.

5. Please. Ken Mehlman is far from being a victim here.
Edited on Thu Aug-26-10 09:32 AM by racaulk
He helped to engineer the placement on the ballot, and the subsequent passing of, anti-gay marriage amendments in 21 states during his reign. He was behind anti-gay fliers that were mailed to citizens in states like Arkansas for the sole purpose of using the thought of gay marriage into scaring Christian voters into voting Republican (see the images below). He has also repeatedly endorsed horribly anti-gay candidates for office, such as Rick Santorum.

He did all of the above, and much more, knowing that he himself is a gay man, putting aside the needs and legal rights of people such as himself in his quest for personal wealth, power, and prestige. That level of rank hypocrisy and greed is about the most sickening thing I can imagine.

I believe the only reason he is being open and honest about his sexual orientation now is because he has nothing to lose, and plenty to gain, by doing so.

Mehlman has consistently proven himself to be a self-serving asshole, and his public coming out sure hasn't changed that.

Perhaps you are a more forgiving person than I am. But Mehlman can rot in Hell, as far as I'm concerned.

:grr:

Edited for further clairty and to include the linked images.

8. A few years back I would have said the same exact thing about Ted Olsen
This is the guy that that helped put George Bush into office and now he's the one leading the fight to overturn Prop8, which will probably head straight to the Supreme Court. Even Media Matter's David Brock was a loathing right-wing screed who coined "A little bit slutty, a little bit nutty" of Anita Hill.

What Olsen and Brock have done in the past I would have said the same thing as you have. Mehlman is a vile disgusting existance of a man, but men and women can change. They can see the error of their ways and they can do something about it that can make a world of positive change. Who knows what path Ken Mehlman will take? He could continue promoting the vile, hateful ways of the republican party such as Mary Cheney or he could realize that he has hard work to help undo the hate he has created and will do something about it. I do keep an open heart and open mind that perhaps he will see the wrong he has done in the past and try to make amends for the future. All we can do is 'Wait and See'.
