36. I really have to wonder
You simply cannot keep the bigotry and hate at the level they have been driving it to indefinitely. It will boil over at some point. And undoubtedly when it does boil over, Glenn Beck will suddenly realize that he can't control an enraged mob after all.

112. Gets old, don't it?
I'm a Fundamentalist Atheist myself. But maybe we could use some Xmas cheer from the Black Adder...

Baldrick: Well, I was a bit rushed. I've been helping out with the workhouse nativity play.

Ebenezer: Oh, of course! How did it go?

Baldrick: Well, not very well -- at the last moment, the baby playing Jesus died!

Ebenezer: Oh, dear! This high infant-mortality rate is a real devil when it comes to staging quality children's theatre. What did you do?

Baldrick: Got another Jesus.

Ebenezer: Oh, thank goodness. ...and his name?

Baldrick: `Spot.' There weren't any more children, so we had to settle for a dog instead.

Ebenezer: Oh, dear. I'm not convinced that Christianity would have established its firm grip over the hearts and minds of mankind if all Jesus had ever said was "woof."

Baldrick: Well, it went all right until the shepherds came on. See, we hadn't been able to get any real sheep, so we had to stick some wool...

Ebenezer: ...on some other dogs.

Baldrick: Yeah...and the moment Jesus got a whiff of them, he's away! While the angel's singing "Peace on Earth, Goodwill to Mankind," Jesus scampers across and tries to get one of the sheep to give him a piggyback ride!

Ebenezer: Scarcely appropriate behaviour for the son of God, Mr Baldrick. Weren't the children upset?

Baldrick: Nah, they loved it. They want us to do another one at Easter -- they want to see us nail up the dog.

100. Oh you don't want to avert your eyes, it's depressing... like those miserable psalms
GOD: Arthur! Arthur, King of the Britons! Oh, don't grovel! If
there's one thing I can't stand, it's people groveling.
ARTHUR: Sorry--
GOD: And don't apologize. Every time I try to talk to someone it's
"sorry this" and "forgive me that" and "I'm not worthy". What are you
doing now!?
ARTHUR: I'm averting my eyes, oh Lord.
GOD: Well, don't. It's like those miserable Psalms-- they're so
depressing. Now knock it off!
ARTHUR: Yes, Lord.

But if We did that, then we would get all these requests to smite a bunch of other people, and that would put Us right in the middle of Earth politics. Officially We are trying to not to take sides. (Unofficially I think it's fairly clear which side I'm on)

I think Glenny is feeling guilty about not having ever served a mormon mission since he is an adult convert.

And since mormons only EVER see non-members as potential converts, maybe that's the true focus of Beck's pandering to the teabaggers. It sure wouldn't surprise me.

But then again, the reality is this is just a two minute hate organized to co-opt (to use a stupid phrase) "the true march of liberty". ...to turn our heroes into villains and resurrect old ones under a false god wedded to a dangerous ideology.

I prefer my alternate universe where Beck truly understood Orson Welles and his entire career was all a big set up for a glorious tragically-ironic finale.

56. Here is from the best source IMO.
http://dneiwert.blogspot.com/2006/12/eliminationism-in-america-i.html

While it may seem as though this rising drumbeat of eliminationism proceeding from the American right is something new and uniquely dangerous, a look at our history actually reveals that it is something buried deep in our national psyche. It lies dormant in our soil and comes bursting forth when bidden.

What distinguishes eliminationism -- and particularly the rhetoric that precedes it and fuels it -- is that it represents a kind of self-hatred, especially in an American culture which advertises itself as predicated on inclusiveness, egalitarianism, and equal opportunity, since it runs precisely counter to those ideals. Eliminationists, at heart, really hate the very idea of America.

It has its origins, like slavery and war, in some of man's most ancient and most savage impulses: the desire to dominate others, through violence if necessary. However, in contrast, it goes largely unnoticed and largely unexamined, perhaps because it is a side of human nature so ugly we prefer not even to recognize its existence. So much so that only recently have we even had a term like "eliminationism" with which to frame it.

As I've explained, the term's first significant use came from historian Daniel Jonah Goldhagen in his controversial text, Hitler's Willing Executioners: Ordinary Germans and the Holocaust. Goldhagen never provides a concise definition of the word, but rather constructs a massively detailed description of the eliminationist mindset.

66. the Humboldt professor who spoke with our class
wrote a book on altruism. Why some people during Hitler sacrificed their lives and their families to help others, while others were more than willing to turn in their neighbors and murder others. He was a baby at the time of Hitler and his mother was waiting to get on one of the cattle cars-his mother shoved him in the hands of a young woman and pleaded with her to take her baby.

Well, the woman who cared for him was single and someone reported her to the gestapo-that she had a baby. When questioned, she cried and told them that a german soldier got her pregnant and left her. They bought it.

What he found was that families who used less physical punishment and had more open dialogue with each other were more likely to save another, while those who lived in fear of a family member and had more severe physical punishment were more likely to turn another in and kill. It was a rather fascinating discussion. Those who fear authority can easily be led to commit atrocities.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kristallnacht

"Kristallnacht (German pronunciation: ; literally "Crystal Night") or The Night of Broken Glass was an anti-Jewish pogrom in Nazi Germany (including Austria and Sudetenland) from the 9th until the 10th of November 1938. It is also known as Novemberpogrome, Reichskristallnacht, Reichspogromnacht or Pogromnacht in German.<1>

The Kristallnacht was triggered by the assassination in Paris of German diplomat Ernst vom Rath by Herschel Grynszpan, a German-born Polish Jew. In a coordinated attack on Jewish people and their property, 91 Jews were killed and 25,000 to 30,000 were arrested and placed in concentration camps. 267 synagogues were destroyed, and thousands of homes and businesses were ransacked. This was done by the Hitler Youth, the Gestapo and the SS.<2> The Kristallnacht also served as a pretext and a means for the wholesale confiscation of firearms from German Jews.<3>

While the assassination of Rath served as a pretext for the attacks, the Kristallnacht was part of a broader racial policy of Nazi Germany including antisemitism and persecution of the Jews.<4> Kristallnacht was followed by further economic and political persecutions. It is viewed by many historians as the beginning of the Final Solution, leading towards the genocide of the Holocaust.<5><6>"

Only this time I'm betting either Hispanics or Muslims get targeted.

along with many other 'righteous leaders' who try to hide their selfishness and hatred behind the mantle of "christ"ian,

Jesus said, "Whatever you do to the least of these, you do unto me". Mr.Beck.

Lots of good exhibits at the American History Musuem and since Beck's circle-jerk starts at 10 a.m. I figure the morning will be good time to pop in.

The best part is that it'll be far enough from crazy-town that I won't have to navigate the crowds but close enough that if God appears I should be able to see the aftermath.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarin_gas_attack_on_the_Tokyo_subway

Because that's what it is starting to sound like. Beck is a nutcase, sure, but he's a cunning, charismatic one. Like any cult leader worthy of the title.

And the people who hang on his every word are religious cult followers in the richest, most dangerous sense of the phrase.

81. Beck is the Prophet of the Book of Kool-Aid.
It's a sad commentary on the state of our country when an insane person spouting loony toon prophecies is found believable by enough people to justify allowing the lunatic a national forum with which to broadcast his nonsensical babbling.

Any reasonably mentally competent person can plainly see that Beck is crazier than a shithouse rat. Yet apparently all too many people actually agree with Beck's dystopic verbal ramblings.

It is not possible to reason with deranged people strung out on kool-aid.

Hopefully this cult will never grow to anywhere near the proportions of a somewhat philosophically similar that arose in Germany in the 1930's.

I'll be thrilled if God sends a large bird to "bless" Beck's bullet-point recitation with a lot of good luck.

I get the warm fuzzies every time I think of how Bush received an avian blessing on his sleeve - best speech I ever saw.

PS - I'll be in ecstasy if God decides to replay Mel Brook's interpretation of "The Birds" all over the tea bags. Besides, it's good for the lawn.

119. This morning on the bike trail.
Commuting in to work, a teabagger was waddling in the middle of the bike trail. He was dragging a big cross. Not really dragging, as it had wheels in the back. And if he was serious about his self-martyrdom, he would have been dragging a cross that would support his lard ass, instead of his flimsy balsa wood. But then he probably had to trim weight for his banner showing some apocalyptic fiery battle.
