GOP to achieve wet dream: Cut SS and make the Democrats responsible for it.
I sure that most of the GOP has been dreaming of cutting SS for sometime but as the 3rd rail of politics they couldn't allow themselves more than the fantasy. But I doubt that ANY Republican ever dreamed they could actually achieve cuts in SS -AND- get the Democrats to take the fall for it.

They must be wetting themselves with excitement.

1. The cat food commission has no power to legislate, it only advises.
They can only make recommendations.

Once they make those recommendations, a bill must be written and passed by the House and Senate, then signed by the President.

Claiming they are gong to cut Social Security is a bit premature.

2. Except *that* process only ratchets one way: more compromise to the right.

I mean, it's not like the Dems are going to take their conservative-leaning recommendations and say "your conservative recommendations are bollocks, we're crafting a *liberal* bill that's right for real Americans!"

They'll start with the pre-compromised recommendation, and it will get worse from there. Just like HCR.

:(

5. When there is a bill, we can worry.
This is just political grandstanding.

12. The time period between "too early to worry about it" and "too late to do anything"..
Has become about negative three or four weeks now.

Before you know it's even happening, cuts to SS will gone from a gleam the legislator's eyes to a fait accompli.

3. When the MAJORITY of the commission hates Social Security and they have stated that Social Security
Has to be cut to balance the budget.

When in fact Social Security has nothing to do with the Deficit and can not by law
Add the fact that Congress has already agreed to fast track the "recommendations" thru and not allow amendments.

Claiming they are going to cut Social Security is FAR FROM premature.

4. The comission can nt cut social security because they can not pass legislation...
Really, this is premature.

Let me know when someone writes a bill.

7. Anyone who thinks the commission's recommendations to gut social security
won't become law is probably in for a most rude awakening for all the handwriting on the wall and the tea leaves loudly scream that it is already a done deal by design: the only possible thing that could derail this speeding train imo is for the administration to come to the conclusion that this one issue would most probably spell defeat for key Democrats at the polls in 2012. :P

15. The recomendations go to
Congress for an up or down vote in a lame duck Congress. There will be no committee hearings. Whatever comes out of the commission is going to be it.

8. The GOP isn't in charge of anything. It's the Dems that are attacking SS.
They will deserve whatever blame they get for it.

10. Exactly.
Who appointed the commission?
Who loaded it up with criminals?
Who will support and defend their findings?

16. That's my point. The GOP gets what they want the Dems get the blame ...
... maybe it wasn't clear that I think the Dems deserve the blame.

13. The so called Democrats will let it happen
that stupid right wing 'commission' is loaded with corporate liars.

Simpson is a slime but right wing Reed is just as right wing and slimy and he calls himself a Democrat.

21. A legacy of mandating corporate insurance & gutting SS for middle class will DESTROY the Democratic

Party for decades to come.

Only massive outrage can stop this insane stampede over the cliff.
