Check Your Hard Drive’s Health , a must, and it's free and easy to install
Edited on Thu Aug-26-10 03:39 PM by DainBramaged
I hate doing this in the Computers forum because virtually NO ONE sees these 'DU service announcements' so I post them here.

The software is CrystalDiskInfo, it is available from this website (trusted) http://majorgeeks.com/CrystalDiskInfo_d5931.html or the author's site http://crystalmark.info/?lang=en

Download it to your computer, run the file by double clicking on it. It installs NO adware spyware or begware (begging for contributions). When installed at the end when you run it it looks like this if your drive has problems:

or this if your drive is healthy

My hard drive here at work has 33426 hours and it still lists good, but what's amazing is that the drive is so old it doesn't have temperature sensors built in (LOL). If it ain't broke, and so the saying goes.

This software works great, try it, it's worth it.

IT AMAZES SOME OF YOU UNRECD THIS! CLOWNS

20. No S.M.A.R.T. can only alert you to pending failure.
Edited on Fri Aug-27-10 07:31 AM by Statistical
Thus you can buy a new hard drive and transfer data before the failure.

Tools like this use S.M.A.R.T.

4. I did a little experiment. I changed the number following the
"d" in your link. In every case, I still got the same site. Perhaps that is your customer number or something like that. I'd be careful with such things when you post promotional posts for products. It could be a security risk.

Just saying...

13. You have some bad sectors on the drive, which will lead to errors
maybe data loss and eventually failure. Windows has a nice tool to help move data from bad sectors to healthy ones, using error checking and recovery. But your drive will need replacing, and it would be wise to save your photos, documents, music to an external drive or discs as soon as possible.

14. Thanks very much.
I am doing a total backup now - I recently bought a second external 2TB WD drive (which I made into two raid drives) -- and I had backed up all my images, but not much else.

So tonight everything will be backed up.

However, the hassle is when changing boot drives, one has to re-register again with MicroSoft. I hate that.
And then I have to reload all the development software I use.
Anyway, that is far better than total failure.

Btw, I recommended your post because the IT stuff you post is good.

21. Get Acronis True Image and clone your drive.
After it's done make the new drive your boot drive and you're up and running without having to reinstall everything.

24. What you may find, as I have that after about 90 days of the initial registration
it's painless if you have to do it agin, it doesn't ask you to put in the key, and since it's a hardware change it's easy. BTY Acronis is best way to copy drive, and cheap on EBay. I use it ALL the time and it couldn't be simpler. Just turn off anti-virus software.

Thank you for the compliment, I appreciate it.

I suspect my C: isn't like it used to be as it makes soft clicks during boot/reboot. I have a stand-by replacement ready for it because of the clicking. It's been doing it for about 9 months and it'd be cool to see what this program has to say about it's condition.

F the UnRec'ers because Imma have to counter with a Rec of my own!

Update: Ran the tool and says C: = Good. I guess the clicks are just quirks :insert Spock eyebrow lift here:.
Will keep an eye/ear on this drive anyway.

Oh wait it is solid state drive (SSD). :)

Kick & Rec for the OP. It is always smart to use S.M.A.R.T. (the technology behind the tool in the OP).

36. Thanks for this, my 4 1/2 year old Vaio came up as good at 42 degrees C!
Yay! It can get very hot and I was glad to see the temp was Ok.

It has been playing up a bit lately but that's probably because it needs a disk scan which is a chore I haven't done for ages.

I defrag regularly, and use Uniblue & TuneUp Utilities often.
