Anybody know anything about Alveda King, niece of MLK, to appear with Glenn Beck
Edited on Thu Aug-26-10 04:43 PM by ProgressiveEconomist
at his DC extravaganza on Saturday?

Looking to see whether Fox "News" was covering the NYC Muslim cabbie stabbiing (no so far), I get only my second look ever at Glenn Beck's show. Alveda King was the guest, on a remarkable show with the Lincolm Memorial as the "faux" backdrop.

Is Alveda King a mental patient?

4. Thanks for that link. I see--she is PAID by the ultra-right to try to hijack her
uncle MLK's legacy--that is her JOB.

16. And she's not the only one. Remember Niger Innis, head of the 'Congress of Racial
Equality (CORE)?

Forty-some years ago , CORE was a legitimate civil rights organization, one of the most respected. Later, Niger's dad Roy took it over, turned it into a Republican-funded street hustle, and handed it down to his son Niger.

Niger Innis's most recent payday was an event at the National Press Club to deny accusations of racism against the Tea Party. See http://www.maletphoto.com/Politics/Black-Tea-Party-Conservatives/13210148_LdPNs/1/958997709_i9Wp4 .

10. Exactly--she was on the anti-gay NOM bus tour this summer
She sold out to the wingnuts long before Beck dreamed of co-opting MLK's dream.

11. I wonder what the rest of the King family--especially MLK's children--have had to say
about her.

Isn't there a MLK III? How can a mere niece presume to speak for the family? Especially when she's getting paid to twist the family legacy into support for hateful ultraright policies?

13. There is an MLK III
A story at MSNBC quoted him on the Beck stunt:

Sharpton's National Action Network planned a "Reclaim the Dream" rally featuring Education Secretary Arne Duncan, National Urban League president Marc Morial and Martin Luther King III.

In an opinion piece for The Washington Post, King said of Beck's event that it's "commendable that this rally will honor the brave men and women of our armed forces who serve our country with phenomenal dedication." But he also said it was clear the organizers were invoking his father's work.

"My father championed free speech. He would be the first to say that those participating in Beck's rally have the right to express their views," King wrote Wednesday. "But his dream rejected hateful rhetoric and all forms of bigotry or discrimination, whether directed at race, faith, nationality, sexual orientation or political beliefs."

I haven't looked up his op-ed piece yet, but that's something I'm interested in seeing now. Thanks for raising the question.

:hi:

20. I remember, a while back, some indirect relative of Jr. was saying he'd be a Republican
today ...

and I thought then ... I wonder what someone who actually was around him (read: son or daughter) for more than just a day every year or so might have thought about MLKJr. being a "Republican" ...

21. She used to be a Democratic politician in Georgia
http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/why-alveda-king-perfect-glenn-becks-rally

She's a phony who loves to pimp out her honorary doctorate as a real one. She's more in the camp of Clarence Thomas and Star Parker than any of the black real civil rights leaders or intellectuals.
