Fake shark fin spotted in Somerset cove, Mass.
Edited on Thu Aug-26-10 06:03 PM by Ian David
SOMERSET, Mass. -- Harbormasters, police and firefighters responded to a mayday call about a shark sighting very close to shore in Somerset, Mass. on Thursday, but it turned out to be a hoax.

<snip>

Crowds began to gather to see what looked like to be a great white shark fin in Fox Hill Cove that runs between Swansea and Somerset.

“People were like wow, taking pictures and calling people. They couldn’t believe it,” Medeiros added.

After a few hours a boater discovered it was nothing more than a Styrofoam fin painted black with duct tape and weights attached with fishing line.

<snip>

“It ties you up and if something really happened… if someone was drowning or something like that it takes you away from the area and we could be responding to that call and someone could have died because of it,” Proulx said.

2. What would have been funny would be if the other end of the fishing line...

... were attached to a real Great White Shark.

Okay, not funny for the shark.

Or the person who pulls it out of the water, "Hey, it's a fake fin-- OH MY GOD!!!"

Actually, the fin should have had a Channel 7 logo on the bottom, since they've been flogging "OMG SHARKS!" for weeks now.

Really, though.

Fake Loch Ness Monsters are funny.

Fake sharks, NOT funny.
