Wash., D.C. has a nuke HAZMAT event - re: hospital

http://hisz.rsoe.hu/alertmap/index.php?smp=&lang=eng

The military's flagship hospital has acknowledged it mishandled two packages of radioactive material in May, possibly exposing staff and patients to elevated radiation levels. Spokesman Chuck Dasey said Thursday that Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington doesn't dispute the allegations made by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The commission said the packages sat beneath a lobby counter for nearly two days after they were delivered. Dasey says the hospital has since reinforced its nuclear medicine safety program and retrained staff on the proper handling of radioactive material. The packages contained radioactive material used to treat and diagnose ailments such as cancer and heart disease. NRC spokesman Neil Sheehan said no harm has been reported from the incident.

1. Yes, well, when those materials are shipped, there are strict
regulations for their packaging. Radioactive materials have very specific packaging requirements that reduce the risk to the public to virtually nothing. You can find the rules by checking the USPS website.

Why do I know this? Because, as a mineral specimen dealer, I shipped many radioactive specimens to the mineral collectors who were my customers. I finally stopped carrying radioactive minerals due to the complexity of the regulations and the packaging costs.

When hospitals or other medical facilities order radioactive isotopes for treatments, you can be assured that the suppliers adhere to all the regulations. Nobody was at any risk from this unopened package.

Once again, your Hungarian panic site misses the mark and reports a harmless incident as a disaster. Feh!

3. All unusual things having to do with radioactive materials
get reported. In this case, there was no risk to anyone from the unopened package. Read the last line in your copy and paste text.

No risk. No harm. Not news. Crying "Wolf" simply gets you ignored when something really does happen that is a threat.

4. I never said there was a risk. I merely post nuclear events

said nuclear events are supposed to be published by law. I merely pass the info along.

make yourself happy and stop reading my posts.

5. Well, if the NRC says there was no harm . . .
Oh wait; they said "no harm has been reported." That's not quite the same thing, is it?

9. Who said anything about banning radioactive material?
Reading for comprehension seems to be a short suit. But maybe radioactive material should be handled with a little more attention and care than say, a box of cotton swabs? Or is that concept too obscure? No, probably best to make it a binary, all-or-nothing proposition for the mouth-breathers who can't appreciate anything more complicated than an episode of Spongebob Squarepants.

10. Where do you think radioactive material comes from?
What do you think OP's motive is in all these "nuke event" threads?
