Well Mr. President, was it worth it?
Was it worth throwing the LGBT community under the bus the day you took office? After all, you pissed off a key section of your constituency, yet you're apparently not getting a thing back in return. So was it worth it?

"The letter, signed by more than 70 pastors and other Christian leaders, calls on the media and other public officials to offer "no further airtime" or attention to those who suggest Obama is a Muslim, not a Christian. The reaction comes after a recent Pew poll found that nearly 1 American in 5 believes Obama is Muslim — an increase over a year ago.

Still, CBN's David Brody noticed one prominent evangelical who hasn't spoken up in Obama's defense: Rick Warren, the founder of Saddleback Church, and author of the best-selling book "The Purpose Driven Life."

<http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_upshot/20100826/pl_yblog_upshot/evangelicals-condemn-attacks-on-obamas-faith-but-warren-remains-silent>

Perhaps there is poetic justice. Perhaps Mr. President you will learn a hard lesson here. Let's hope so.

3. Obama gives him a lot of material to use.
Obama himself said he wanted us to keep him in check. How are we supposed to do that when we play snuggles with him 24/7?

If the man really means what he says, he needs to know he's pissed a bunch of supporters off. Supporters he needs in about 60 days. Surely he doesn't expect undying devotion when he's asked to be held to task...

8. Democrats want to lose their Congressional majority, because
it makes it easier to implement pro-corporate conservative policies and state that you went along 'in the interests of bipartisanship', when the reality is something else entirely.

7. Ah yes, the geek chorus, right on time,
Pointing out that Obama has thrown the LGBT community under the bus isn't bashing, it is the truth. Or haven't you been paying attention? Or do you even care? Somehow I think it is the latter that applies.

If the president hadn't thrown the LGBT community under the bus, we wouldn't be having this "conversation". But he did, so here we are. Sad that you put the man's reputation above the civil rights of millions across this country.

16. No, if you would read the article,
This is a story about Rick Warren. Notice the headline, "Evangelicals condemn attacks on Obama’s faith, but Warren remains silent."

But since I dare to criticize your precious, justifiably so, you respond with hatred and vitriol.

And you know what, frankly I don't care what you believe. You don't know me IRL, you don't know what I do with my time, and frankly, given your nature, that's a good thing in my opinion. However there are people here who do know me IRL, know what I do, and know that I care passionately about civil rights for all.

More that I can say about you.

37. We don't need an excuse to "bash" a president that has been bashing us since the primaries.
Any one remember South Carolina? It seems to me that any LGBT dems who aren't questioning his stance toward them at this point must be suffering from Stockholm Syndrome.

Hardly recycling, but hey, what else do you have to attack with. It's OK, I understand, the president was proven to be a bad bargainer. I'd be embarrassed and defensive too if I were in your shoes.

32. Bringing up the 20 month old Rick Warren "story" would certainly fall under
the recycled talking points category, regardless of the date they recycled it.

34. The letter was released *yesterday*, not twenty months ago.
Warren's signature was not on it. Again, this happened yesterday.

You are really reaching on this one, reaching and falling desperately short.

17. I think it was a pretty sly political move, personally.
Edited on Fri Aug-27-10 01:06 PM by Marr
Coporate Democrats have been itching under their majority status since 2006. Remember the ridiculous maneuvering Reid had to do in order to let conservative legislation pass? That was bad enough, but getting majorities in both houses of Congress was even worse. It made their game way too obvious. I mean Christ, how about that Olympia Snowe crap. 'We had to dump it all and push an old Republican plan, to get Olympia Snowe's vote! Yeah, that's the ticket!'.

It's not fooling anyone. I suspect a lot of the corporate Democrats, of which Obama is the current mascot, would prefer to see the Dems hold only paper-thin majorities in Congress, or even paper-thin minorities.

18. Of course they want a bigger boogeyman. A stronger GOP gives them
a more plausible reason to deny the 'drug-addicted', 'fucking stupid' Left the policies they voted for when they voted for him.

24. Well then, perhaps you should talk to the president,
And persuade him to stop opening up attacks on his key constituents and throwing them under the bus.

How would you feel if you were gay and the president said that he didn't support gay marriage?

How would you feel if you were a teacher and the president attacked public education in a manner that went beyond even what Bush did?

How would you feel if you cared about your civil liberties, and then watched as this administration continued to erode them?

How would you feel if you were against the wars, and this administration continued them?

How would you feel? Oh, yeah, thrown under the bus.

22. Religion is the basis for a lot of bigotry. The President should rethink his belief system.
It may lead him away from his homophobic view of gays.

It should not be a surprise that the political benefits did not materialize. The only people who cared about his selection of Rick Warren were the people it (rightfully) offended.

30. Yeah, but you think that in exchange for pissing off a key constituency
The president would at least be acknowledged as a Christian by Warren. Instead, we are hearing the sound of silence:shrug:

Not a real good bargain on the part of Obama. Perhaps he ought to stick to dancing with those that brought him.

36. You apparently don't get realpolitik do you?
Generally if you scratch somebody's back in the manner that Obama scratched Warren's back, you generally expect some sort of support or favor in return. At the time it was the excuse for this act of Obama's was that he was reaching out to the evangelical community. You would think that they would have the decency to reach out in return. Apparently not, and Obama apparently made a bad political calculation, pissing off some of his ardent supporters in exchange for the sound of silence.

to show that Obama was not taking orders from the queers.
