So I ran into some Beckanites at the gas station...

outoftowners - just pulled into town for tomorrow. They wanted directions to their hotel, I'm lousy with directions and might have pointed them to S.E DC instead.. I asked them exactly what were they going to be honoring or reclaiming back tomorrow..got the usual idiot spewing points, clutching a Beck book to the chest like it was a bible. "Y'all just hate him because he's black!" yelled another driver from his pickup truck who had started to get in on the conversation..on that the Beckanites abruptly fled back into their car, and sped off..yep, there's no confronting them with them with facts..

2. Do you expect they'll have a really big turnout?
It seems like such a ridiculous theatrical event to me.

3. Yay for the one yelling at them!
Exactly what I'd want to say but I'd be too chicken to open my mouth.

I live in Arlington and was thinking of going there with my camera ready to photograph The Stupid. But I'm already so freaked out, I just found out I have a stomach ulcer, either from the fear or anger, I don't know which, but anyway I better stay away.

CodePink and The World Can't Wait, will be there and probably lots of others. If you guys go, you certainly won't be alone.

22. About that stomach ulcer... It's not caused by either fear or anger.
Edited on Fri Aug-27-10 07:49 PM by kas125
It's caused by a bacteria, h pylori. I nearly died because for so long doctors didn't know it, I didn't know it, nobody did. I'd had ulcers for years, they ran in my family so it seemed to be no big deal, when it hurt I took the medicine. Then fifteen years ago I lost half my stomach and part of my intestines because of scar tissue caused by ulcers. Treating the h pylori with biaxin and pepto bismol after surgery was a new idea then, but thankfully my surgeon had read about it. Please do some research and if your doctor isn't treating the real cause of your ulcer, find another doctor. You can start here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helicobacter_pylori

24. omg, then I hope that's not what I have!!!
actually I'm not sure at all what's wrong, I just feel a funny burn the last couple weeks that won't go away. I've done the self-diagnosis B.S. of reading about stomach ulcers online, and the symptoms feel like what I've felt.
I heard when I was little that they come from worrying, and I've been a serious hardcore worrier all my life, then I don't know what made me suddenly remember about them this week.
I just need to visit the doctor so I know. I'll read this, add it to the stuff I've looked up lately.

I am glad this didn't end you, it sounds so scary!!!!

25. Everyone thought they were from streess or worrying for years
and years. I remember reading an article about the doctor who was trying to convince all his colleagues around the world that ulcers were caused by a bacteria and the guy was shunned because they all thought he was crazy. Turned out he was right, though.

My mom had them, her brother had them, my best friend in high school had them, so when mine was first diagnosed I thought okay, no big deal. No doctor ever told me that an ulcer could actually HARM you, I just thought they were something irritating and when they hurt you took an antacid or a prescription pill and went about your business. Until the beginning of that summer of 1995 when I took out my clothes from the year before and they fell off me. THEN I started paying attention to how often I was throwing up and a host of other symptoms. Turned out that scar tissue had totally obstructed the bottom half of my stomach and it wasn't emptying because nothing could get through. It was quite an ordeal and nothing I'd like to live through again, I was in the hospital for a month. And actually, to be truthful, I didn't feel normal for another seven years!

But ulcers now are totally treatable, so if that's what you have don't worry, just go to a doctor and get the test for h pylori. It's a breath test and it's easy and painless. I wouldn't want another human to have to go through what I did if I can prevent it, so do please go get tested because if you do have an ulcer, you need to kill those germs before it can heal. Best wishes to you and please let me know because now *I'll* be the one who is worrying, lol.

4. I had a redneck looking guy with a Bush sticker on his car
ask me directions to a mostly Native American town near where I live. It has a Native American name and his pronunciation of it was way off. I corrected his pronunciation with a phony pronunciation that would be very offensive to anyone up there that heard it. I set him up to get his ass kicked if he was dumb enough to repeat that and gave him real good directions.

10. I ran into a couple at New Carrollton this morning
Edited on Fri Aug-27-10 02:22 PM by LibertyLover
They were trying to figure out what metro station to get off at for the Smithsonian (n.b. there is a Smithsonian metro stop). I was waiting in line to put money on my fare card so I had a front row seat, so to speak, for the first part. When I walked in I noticed them at the map. The female 'bagger was wearing a shirt with stripes and stars, not quite the flag, but intended to remind you of it. I don't know how long they had been at the map but there were one or two people waiting to look at it as well, so it was probably more than a minute or two. Anyway, they approached the girl on line in front of me to ask what station they needed to get off at. She wasn't sure (!) and pointed to the Metro employees helpfully waiting nearby to answer questions. I swear the 'bagger couple looked at the Metro people and shuddered. Next they asked me. Being my normal helpful and museum-nerdy self, I asked what Smithsonian museum they were going to. BIG MISTAKE. I admit it. In response I got a classic deer-in-headlights look. Then the male 'bagger said rather curtly that they wanted to go to The Smithsonian. I explained that the Smithsonian was made up of a number of separate museums, some of which weren't even in DC. That seemed to confuse them and it took the female 'bagger a minute, during which time I got my fare cared replenished and I moved out of the line. They followed. The female 'bagger said they wanted to see the planes. I understood, or so I thought, they wanted Air and Space and said so. The male 'bagger said, no we want the hazy planes. Now fortunately I have an 8 year old daughter, so I am sort of used to circumlocutions. I now understand that they want to go to the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center of the Air and Space Museum which is out at Dulles International Airport. I carefully explained that the metro does not go to Dulles yet, al thought they are building the tracks right now, and the best I could think of is for them to take the orange line right upstairs to West Falls Church and either cab it (told them I didn't know the cost) or take one of the buses from there to Dulles and then see if there was a shuttle over to Udvar-Hazy or if they could get a cab or something. I pointed to the Metro employees and suggested that the couple speak to them and see if they have better information. The 'bagger couple looked at each other, there was a small head shake from each and they asked how to get to the main Air and Space building. I gave them directions and wished them a good day. That's when the male 'bagger confirmed they were in town for BeckFest 2010. As he thanked me he said that they wanted to do some sightseeing today because tomorrow they were going to be attending "Mr. Beck's" (I swear that's what the guy called him) "conference". I just said "oh" in a flat voice and walked away.
