AARP: Send A Message Today to the White House in Support of Social Security
Send A Message Today in Support of Social Security

August 26, 2010

By Barry Jackson
AARP

Along with many others here at AARP, I was shocked by Alan Simpson's recent thoughtless comments calling Social Security a "milk cow" and insulting millions of Americans.

Coming from anyone these comments would be over the line. But what makes them more offensive is Senator Simpson's position: co-chair of President Obama's Fiscal Commission, which is currently considering changes to Social Security as a solution to reduce the deficit.
How can a commission led by Sen. Simpson fairly make recommendations on the future of important programs like Social Security?

Click here to send a letter to the White House TODAY, urging that the President's Fiscal Commission stop considering benefit cuts to Social Security to address the deficit.

Or take a minute to record a voice message about Alan Simpson's comments on Social Security. Simply dial 1-877-814-7890 and speak your mind!

You and I know that the millions of Americans who receive Social Security aren't "milking the system." Social Security is paid for by the lifetime of contributions from hard-working Americans, and hasn't contributed even one penny to the federal deficit.

Social Security cuts should not be considered to reduce the deficit - in fact, how can we accept any changes recommended by a commission led by Alan Simpson? But President Obama set up this commission, and it's up to him to protect Social Security from budget-driven cuts.

Tell President Obama to stand up for Social Security and urge his Commission to reject budget-driven cuts to Social Security.

.....

(bold type added)

Points to remember:

1. Social Security is NOT a contributor to the deficit. The Defense Budget is, however. So are tax cuts for the wealthy. But, we are not supposed to question THAT.

2. Social Security occupies an entirely separate fund from the budget, and it is paid into by workers during their entire working lives, to be utilized in support of their retirement. When workers retire, they are entitled to receive a portion of this money that they have, for decades, paid into the system. The word "entitlement" has been demonized by the greedy wealth holders in the very same way as the word "liberal". The purpose for that is to demoralize working people into *unquestioned *acceptance* that SS will not be there for them upon their retirement.

And it is a corrosive lie.

3. These despicable enemies of the people hate Social Security because it has worked the way it was supposed to, and for many years. Administered smoothly by our government, it has kept seniors, widowed spouses, surviving young children and disabled people out of abject poverty. It is the last remaining brick in the structure of a functioning government that the wingnuts and duplicitous Democrats have left to destroy, in order to fulfill their assertions that *government doesn't work and is the enemy*.

Here is the truth:

There Is No Social Security Crisis, February 24, 2009

President Obama, It’s Time to Can the Catfood Commission

In a letter that Obama's Deficit Commission Co-chair Alan Simpson sent to Ashley Carson of the Older Women’s League (OWL) on August 23, 2010:

.....

If you have some better suggestions about how to stabilize Social Security instead of just babbling into the vapors, let me know. And yes, I’ve made some plenty smart cracks about people on Social Security who milk it to the last degree. You know ‘em too. It’s the same with any system in America. We’ve reached a point now where it’s like a milk cow with 310 million tits! Call when you get honest work!

Al

This is very likely the final opportunity President Obama will be presented to do the right thing.

2. knr - I added this to their message ...
Both parties stood by for years spending the 2.5 trillion dollar surplus knowing full well this money would be needed.

In addition I'm counting on you to protect Medicare from any budget cuts considered by this commission. Any saving from Medicare should remain in Medicare as the boomers will also be enrolling in Medicare in large numbers, just as they will be collecting their SS checks.

Leaving the healthiest segment of our population to the for profit companies and people who have the most expensive health care needs with Medicare is not the best way to reduce the deficit. This should have been considered with the health insurance bill, instead we'll being transferring tax dollars to fund private insurance companies, they knew they would be losing the boomers as paying customers. Wonder what the commission is considering with Medicare?

5. K&R - I hate to see this get buried in today's avalanche of Beck threads.
I've sent my message to the WH, I hope they're getting a boatload!

We need to keep up the pressure, no let up. Call them out on their lies!
