Have there been interviews with Illegal Immigrants to get their side of the issue? |
|
Edited on Wed May-16-07 06:21 PM by theophilus
I am just wondering if there is a database on the net where male and female Mexicans in the U.S. illegally speak their minds. I realize it would have to be anonymous and done by another Hispanic, but has tjos happened? I might have missed it but I don't remember hearing the people who are here illegaly say what they think about America and what they want. Does anyone know? Thanks.

1. It's been tried, but they kept floating back to the Mother Ship... |
|
;-) Sorry, but I finally just couldn't resist a jab at the common terminology.
Hopefully someone else will be along to give you a straight answer!

2. sure, lots of times, but never |
|
aired on MSM...
there are many videos like this from a Christian perspective (real christians, that is) I have seen through my church, documenting their day-to-day lives and the various ministries which cater to them. PBS aired one, IIRC.

9. Well the logic follows |
|
If an immigrant is not here legally, then he is an illegal immigrant.
Call them what you will, and the law will do the same.

12. No one called them illegal immigrants until the rabid right |
|
made it their goal to push that buzz word upon the public.
Previously to the rabid right's hatred campaign, they were just immigrants here without green cards, undocumented immigrants.
But fine, follow the rabid right's campaign and spit hatred at the immigrants who come to this country. There is thread after thread in freeperville filled with posts laughing that they are able to get everyone to use the illegal immigrant buzz word.

15. I think its the other way around. |
|
I've never heard the term "undocumented worker or immigrant" until the past few years, and as far back as I can remember illegal alien or immigrant was the commonly used phrase.
The "undocumented"' meme comes from the strange alliance formed between cheap labor big business interests and certain corners of the left.

|
I am positive you make a freeper smile each time you use the phrase and I know using that phrase makes immigrants feel real bad.
Do what you want.

Ignoring the laws you don't like seems to be more up the alley of BushCo.

Bush claims that the War Powers Act is unjust as well...does that mean he would be justified in ignoring it?

28. I believe that you are mistaken. |
|
The term used was "illegal alien." Foreigners who lived here were issued "alien registration cards." The transition from "alien" to "immigrant" was intentional and had the benign intent of changing the focus from a person's foreignness to a more positive focus on the person's intent to live in this country. The use of the term "undocumented" has been promoted by advocacy groups because it is a softer way to describe the same thing and there is some merit to this because most do not consider illegal entry or residency a serious crime against society. However, "illegal immigrant" is not a right wing. The right wing term is "illegals" --- it removes the person from the description entirely, dehumanizing them and thereby making it easier to distract attention from the lives and struggles of the people at the heart of the discussion.

4. I was Illegal for 3 years in the early 80's but |

I'm a WASP and have never been 'Hispanic' so I guess I can't answer. By the way, there are hundreds of thousands of WASPy illegals - Brits, Irish, Aussies, Kiwis et al - are they building fences around the airports yet?

they are people who overstay a visa, either accidentally or intentionally.

According to the Pew Hispanic Institute about 78% are from Latin America.

approximately 40,000 to 50,000. They're are plenty of undocumented Eastern Europeans around as well but since these people are white and European, no one ever mentions them.

14. If your figure is correct |
|
then Arizona has about 10 times as many illegals, mostly Hispanic, than the entire country has illegal Irish. I'm guessing we're somewhat more significantly impacted.

Don't know, don't really give a frak.
Illegal immigration is the Smokescreen 2.0 of this election term. It's what the Powers want us all to be absolutely rabid over, clawing and biting in rage while they muck around and either don't address the issues that really need to be addressed (i.e. health care, jobs, the War on Terror (reg, TM, copy)) or muck around and *do* the things that *don't* need to be done, (i.e. corporate welfare, tax breaks for the rich, and a really nasty rewrite of the bankruptcy codes that would scare anyone who sat down to read them). I won't buy into it, for those reasons *and* because Big Business (please note caps) has already laid down the foundation to allow illegals into the `country (Mister Bush's "guest worker program"). It's presently stalled in Congress, yes. But give the lobbyists time. They already have the money...

29. Can only speak from personal experience |
|
I've lived and work with maybe three dozen "illegals" in my time. They are split down the middle. About half of them have American kids and want to stay here; the other half are saving money to buy land in their home countries.
