Hyper-nationalism. How will it end...(I'm just bummed about this)
...frankly, I think, in fire.

This nation forgets so easily the past. McCarthy waving blank pieces of paper in the air talking about 200+ Communists, and the witchhunts that followed, damaging the lives of innocent people. We don't pay attention to what happens in other countries with hyper-nationalist movements, and how the fabric of the society is torn apart.

Noone believes it can happen here, or that it's a bad thing. At least until it does happen here, and it's worse than you can imagine.

Fuck this. I weep for our country.

1. The strides towards hyper-nationalism
and the accompanying fascist state have bothered me for some time. I am one of those people who believes that 9/11 was manufactured to be the "New Pearl Harbor." It bothers me as much as anything you can imagine, and it's depressing beyond belief.

4. With the US being a pariah country.
Shunned by the rest of the world and left to fend for itself (especially after a global economic collapse). The last thing anyone wants is a 1940's Germany with an American face.

8. Yikes. So obviously this Saturday night is causing a lot of people to have the same thoughts.
I posted a similarly gloomy OP.

I'm worried. I can't believe this many people showed up for this rally. The Tea Party movement has grown incredibly fast - with Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck as spokespersons, Fox News as amplifier, and the Koch brothers and Rupert Murdoch as financiers.

It's really happening. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the pics tonight. I wish I had seen it live (had to work). I really hope I'm wrong on this but this building movement on the right is dangerous and so wrong....

9. Bringing back the draft. What proportion of Beck's zombies on the Mall today do you think
Edited on Sat Aug-28-10 09:10 PM by ProgressiveEconomist
ever had sons or daughters in Iraq or Afghanistan over the last five years?

IMO, bringing back the draft would turn tens of millions of today's little would-be Gordon Gekkoes into tens of millions of antiwar John F. Kerrys.

And bringing back the draft may be on the table sooner than some think, considering the declining ability to raise volunteer military pay as deficits grow and "defense" overcommitments expand.

12. Nationalism is used by conservatives to get the masses to actually vote conservative. Disraeli came
up with the plan in the 1800s in england. If people knew what their own economic self interest was they would never vote Republican. And half the county, the half that reads, know the difference.
