Crowd photos from August 28, 1963 March on Washington
The 1963 March on Washington attracted an estimated 250,000 people for a peaceful demonstration to promote Civil Rights and economic equality for African Americans. Participants walked down Constitution and Independence avenues, then — 100 years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed — gathered before the Lincoln Monument for speeches, songs, and prayer. Televised live to an audience of millions, the march provided dramatic moments, most memorably the Rev Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech.

1. And the U.S. population was only 189 million. So Beck's 87k vs. today's 308m means even less. nt

2. And, as I've mentioned in another thread, there was no internet...
So communication between regions was limited to radio, phone, nightly news and newspapers (magazines and the like).

7. And don't forget the US mail
There was a time, it was cheaper to mail flyers and news letters than to make long distance telephone calls. People burned the midnight oil using mimeograph machines and addressographs getting the information out the old-fashion way. Churches and service organizations had the mailing lists, and a cadre of fine people willing to invest the time and labor to make it work; it was a true grassroots movement.

3. Delighted to be the first person to recommend this thread...
...and I hope many others do the same.

Beck made that statement that white people don't "own" Abraham Lincoln and black people don't "own" Martin Luther King, but it's not about ownership.

It's about respect.

Today's "event" was about making money. And it's been widely publicized that while Beck charged for the event under cover of raising money for "our troops," they won't see a penny until all of the event expenses have been paid. Estimates are at $1 million, right off the top of whatever he raked in, but I'll bet the numbers go significantly higher than that.

6. Past and today
Past: 250,000... White, Black, Brown, Yellow, Red are together.
As Drunken Irishman mentioned no internet, limit news, radio etc..
MLK's dream, the world are together, no hater, love, no war, etc..

Today, 85,000... all White together
Internet, All Day news, cell, mobile, etc...
Beck's dream, hater, dislike black president, greed, war lover, etc...
