BLIND people should carry guns, say gun nuts !
These gun nuts have no problem with a blind man getting a permit to carry a concealed pistol!!!!
They figure that a person shouldn't be denied the right to carry a gun around just because he's blind. In their defence, it does go along with their belief that people shouldn't be denied their right to vote just because their DEAD!!!!

11. In Texas, they require a 'sighted guide'
I found this gem on a news site with the story:

Where do you sign up to be a 'sighted guide'?

Blind Guy: Did I get it?
Me: OHHHH YA...it's a BIG one.

(goes to retrieve pre-planted game)

Michael Moore found some news footage interesting enough to include in, “Bowling for Columbine”, making me a figure in the national gun debate.

4. Bubba is just ten months old, but has been issued the official State of Illinois gun ID.

It will probably be quite a while before Bubba Ludwig gets to use his Firearm Owner's Identification Card. Bubba is just ten months old, but has been issued the official State of Illinois gun ID. The application was filled out by his father, newspaper columnist Howard Ludwig. The ID card arrived, complete with Bubba's toothless baby picture. Ludwig says he never thought the gun permit would be approved. The ID card program is administered by Illinois State Police. A spokesman for the department says there are no restrictions under the law regarding the age of applicants. But long gun-buyers must be at least 18 in Illinois, 21 for handguns.

6. ...
Sure...why not?

Bubba Ludwig may only be 10 months old, but he has already successfully obtained a gun licence in the US state of Illinois.

Bubba's father, Howard Ludwig, applied on his behalf after his grandfather gave him a shotgun as an heirloom.

The licence includes a picture of a toothless Bubba and a squiggle that represents his best attempt at a signature.

7. Are you afraid he's going to shoot you?
It looks like the state of Utah gave him the permit. Take it up with them. (I wouldn't have given him one if it were up to me.)

9. One man's "gun nut" is another's disability rights advocate!
:sarcasm: :sarcasm: :sarcasm:

Wonder why they're not also advocating for people who are blind to get driver's licenses. After all, how else are they gonna get out to the shooting range?

14. Only about 10% of the legally blind can't see...so define "blind."
Edited on Thu May-17-07 04:46 PM by benEzra
Contrary to popular belief, "legally blind" is not necessarily synonymous with being unable to see clearly. Having clear central vision but little peripheral vision can put you in the "blind" category, while still leaving you able to see (and shoot) very well. Only about 10% of the legally blind can't see.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blindness

In 1934, the American Medical Association adopted the following definition of blindness:

"Central visual acuity of 20/200 or less in the better eye with corrective glasses or central visual acuity of more than 20/200 if there is a visual field defect in which the peripheral field is contracted to such an extent that the widest diameter of the visual field subtends an angular distance no greater than 20 degrees in the better eye."

In the U.S., a person with full-field vision of 20/200 corrected is considered legally blind, as is a person with 20/20 vision in a 20-degree visual field. Either of those individuals could safely carry a gun, visually identify an attacker, and shoot the gun competently. So IMHO, it greatly depends on the individual, and you have to go on a case-by-case basis rather than saying legally blind = no guns.

My vision is better than 20/20 corrected, but is worse than 20/400 uncorrected. Without my glasses, I can still see clearly enough to identify an attacker and defend myself by whatever means (and I can shoot damn well without my glasses), and my uncorrected vision is much worse than the corrected vision of many legally blind people.

I think there are a lot of stereotypes about the legally blind on display in this thread...FWIW, my grandmother is legally blind.

15. He sounds like he is very blind, can't see, not just "legally blind"
Edited on Thu May-17-07 04:59 PM by uppityperson
guide dogs, reading braille, etc. Sounds like an interesting person, doing interesting stuff and showing that not being able to see doesn't mean you can't do things. However, a person who cannot see shooting is one thing, but getting a permit is another thing, IMHO.

Edited to add, thank you for providing the info on what "legally blind" means as many do not know this and education is important.
