1. listening to MLKs speech
should be required in every 8th, 9th, 10th, llth and 12th grade civics class.

But I guess that would be too much to expect.

3. Update: They've added photos and an interactive model of the sculpture to their site...
Edited on Sun Aug-29-10 10:16 PM by Turborama
On August 28, 1963, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., a modern-day Founding Father, delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech.

On August 28th, 2010, the 47th anniversary of King’s historic proclamation, our coalition of artists, faith leaders and community organizations erected a 4-story sculpture to honor Dr. King’s Dream and his life-long fight for social justice.

Our event also countered far-right fearmonger Glenn Beck’s attempt to exploit that legacy for his own fame, profit and narrow political agenda.

We just want to say thanks to our partners and everyone else who pitched in with money or time to make this amazing event happen.

Building off our success this summer, let us continue to defend King’s dream from those who would distort and undermine it.

7. They were at the Beck event. The article below gives a good insight into the artist's methodology
The people with the large banner were at the Beck event in conjunction with the sculptor, it seems. I'm going to grab some more photos of them in action and try and find a video, too....

6. Article about the artist who made the sculpture...
Georgia sculptor offers ‘celebration' of King in Washington

By Ernie Suggs
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

As the “Restoring Honor” rally draws thousands to Washington Saturday, a Georgia artist will be trying to remind the world that it's also the anniversary of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

Michael Murphy will install his temporary sculpture, “People’s Memorial to King,” on the National Mall in Washington this weekend in an effort to divert some of the attention from the rally to King.

Murphy, an assistant art professor at Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, is part of Celebrate the Dream, a grass-roots network of artists, social and political activists, and community organizers.

=snip=

“Our goal is to elevate the occasion, to celebrate the memory of Dr. King, not have it belittled,” said Ericka Taylor, the project manager for Celebrate the Dream.

Murphy is a specialist in large-scale installations, and his piece is a "directional" sculpture that changes depending on the vantage point.

“If you were to stray from the ideal point of view, the message gets lost," Murphy said. "The messages of Martin Luther King become distorted as the individual moves away.”

The closer you get, the clearer the message becomes.

10. I feel so badly that we let the haters steal the day.
I wish there was a way to simply ignore people like that clown Beck. And I wish the media would do the same.

It's a shame that more people were not at the real MLK rally.

That is a wonderful tribute to Dr. King. What a difference in the message of these artists and activists than the hate-filled message of the tea-baggers.

I am sure the artist is proud that he was able to honor MLK with his work.
