I bought something made in America this week
A fan made by the Lasko company. Even the plastic parts of the fan seemed to be made in America. A little flag and words "made by American workers" trumpeted this American achievement.

:woohoo:

1. Machine shop workers I speak with say some machining and tool & die work is coming back
China has quality issues on high precision items, and can't match the quick turnaround times of well-equipped US shops.

3. China has quality control issues on everything they make
and people are finally starting to rebel.

Getting it cheaper doesn't do any good if it doesn't work, breaks, or falls apart quickly.

6. They sure do. Almost everything at these '99 cent' stores are made are made in China
what's the point of a 99 cent spatula is the handle falls off immediately.

8. You get what you pay for
How much are you really saving by buying stuff at a dollar store if you have to replace it every few months? That "only a dollar" item ends up costing quite a bit more in replacement parts.

11. Bingo. Costs more to QA their shit
than just do it right here. Not saying they make 100 shit but in exports they have lots of room to improve.

4. Good deal. Keep looking for more USA items. We all have to
find ways to tell the companies that left this country that we are not going to take it anymore. And the best way to get more choices is to vote with our dollars. Hope it wasn't too difficult to find this fan.

9. If you want it right, buy american..
you will find things like regulators for scuba diving, valve control systems for Nuclear Reactors, bleeding edge aerospace, supercomputers, and most super high end communication systems (troposcatter for example) and basically things that need to function properly to support life are made here. (or western europe and japan).

There are lots of american made things most people never buy but make up trillions of dollars of value.

12. I bought 2 Lasko pedestal fans last year for this very reason.
Very easy to assemble, quiet, great performance.

Sadly, I'm in the market for a couple ceiling fans, and have yet to find a company that still makes them in the US.

21. This link might help... June 2008
http://www.hansenwholesale.com/ceilingfans/ceilingfansmadeintheusa.asp

To my knowledge, the only fans sold in the USA that are not Partially or Completely Made in China are those offered by Matthews Fan Company. Matthews fans are manufactured in South America with some parts manufactured and/or assembled in the USA. Matthews fans are a great alternative for those who prefer not to consider items made in China. However, they fit into a very distinct style niche as you can see from the Matthews fan pictured to the right.

Matthews Fans use motors that are "Made in the USA" by McMillan Electric in Wisconson....

17. My young grandchildren were coming to visit so I bought
some plastic cups with built in straws for them. As I was washing the cups and taking off the stickers, I noticed on the stickers they were actually made in America!! I took down the name of the company and googled it to get their website. Then I e-mailed the company to thank them for not outsourcing their product. They e-mailed me to thank me for thanking them.

http://www.halepetdoor.com/ - look on the right next to "Featured Solution" - that's the door we got and it's made in the U.S.A. They also make a donation to the rescue where you got your dog from.

Glad you found Lasko. I have four Lasko fans and they last forever. If you got a tower fan, remember to clean out the filter periodically.

by union workers.

and this company: http://www.allamericanclothing.com/SFNT.html

Those are some of the places we order my husbands clothes from. He refuses to buy clothes from overseas sweatshops.

This company is in Texas http://www.texasjeansusa.com/texas.html but I don't know if they are union or not.

30. I'm purchasing some made in the USA electronics next week..
http://www.geckodrive.com/

I'm retrofitting an old computer controlled metal milling machine to a modern control system because, while the mechanics of the machine are quite literally made like a tank and still good, the computer and electronics were made in the 1980's, after extensive research I've found that there is no better made or designed budget priced stepper or servo drive electronics than Geckodrive and you can actually call and talk to the owner/designer.

34. Well, we are the largest manufacturing base in the world
Not minimalizing the problem of outsourcing, but it is just not true that we don't build anything here any more. We don't do as much "unskilled" labor-intensive low-end manufacturing (hand stitching clothes, shoes, etc.), or cheap plastic extrusion stuff. However, we do still dominate in the highly technical, extreme precision markets, and although I know it opens a huge can of worms, we still produce an awful lot of automobiles. The "domestics" - less what they outsource to Canada and Mexico and the "imports" - less what they they pre-assemble out of country.

A hard reality is that "industrial base" means less than it used to. Factory/manufacturing technology has become much less infrastructure. For instance, 20 years ago it required a multimillion $ printing press to produce high quality 4-color printouts. Those presses (Heidelbergs ect.) took weeks to install, weighed tons, and were basically considered real estate in many places and owners paid property taxes on the value. Better quality can be produced for less money on a press today that you can load in the back of a moving van and set up in an afternoon. Oh, the kicker, it could take a crew of maybe 6-8 skilled people to prep and operate that press--the new ones may take only 1, less skilled person!
