Man caught selling marijuana to pay for police academy
While police officers arrest pot dealers fairly frequently, Orem police officers heard a pretty unusual reason for the illegal activity during an arrest this weekend.

The 20-year-old man said he was dealing the drugs to save up for the police academy.

“It’s probably not the first time this has happened, but this is the first time I’ve heard of someone admitting it,” said Orem Sgt. Craig Martinez. “Most drug dealers wouldn’t say they were trying to save up to become a cop.”

The man was arrested after Orem police were told he was dealing drugs and obtained a search warrant for his home. He was arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana with intent to sell, possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a controlled substance for pills he had and possession of drug paraphernalia.

2. Was his name "Kelso" by any chance?
I swear this was a plot for a TV sitcom episode (or should have been).

4. Why does it cost money to go to the police academy?
Seems like a bad idea to put up financial barriers to that kind of job.

8. It costs $3000 to go to the Police Academy....
..it is part of most Community College Programs.

City, County and State Governments have learned that they can put this cost over on to the job seeker.

You must be "Certified" to apply for a job in Law Enforcement. The only way to get the certification is to go thru the Community College Police Program. No certifiacation.. they wont even look at your application.

If you are lucky, you can get a "sponsor". If you have a particular skill that a police agency wants.. they will pay for your police academy.. but in this job market.. it is very hard to find a sponsor.

Obviously, selling MJ would not be recommended as the best way to raise money to get your police job. However, I have heard of police recruits selling their department issued guns to pay back their credit card loans they used to get to the Academy. Law Enforcement is a Business... it's pay for play. Prisons are a "Business".. profit centers...crime DOES pay.

What this does.... is point out the brutal nature of the job market these days...people will do anything to get a "Job"... we are all servants to Big Corp..Big Govt.
