Mexico in drive to clean up police
Source: Los Angeles Times, Bloomberg

MEXICO CITY: About a 10th of the Mexican federal police force has been sacked under new rules designed to weed out crooked officers and modernise law enforcement.

The decimation of the force is part of President Felipe Calderon's crackdown on drug cartels, which includes overhauling the 34,500-strong federal police force.

Mexico's fight with drug gangs is hampered by corruption among police officers and soldiers who are supposed to be doing battle with cartels that generate as much as $US30 billion ($33.7 billion) a year selling marijuana, cocaine and heroin to users in the US. Related violence has killed more than 28,000 people since Mr Calderon came to office in December 2006.
