Afghanistan's dirty little secret

Western forces fighting in southern Afghanistan had a problem. Too often, soldiers on patrol passed an older man walking hand-in-hand with a pretty young boy. Their behavior suggested he was not the boy's father. Then, British soldiers found that young Afghan men were actually trying to "touch and fondle them," military investigator AnnaMaria Cardinalli told me. "The soldiers didn't understand."

All of this was so disconcerting that the Defense Department hired Cardinalli, a social scientist, to examine this mystery. Her report, "Pashtun Sexuality," startled not even one Afghan. But Western forces were shocked - and repulsed.

1. Oh 500 BCE Athens
Sparta...

No I am not going to defend this, but I am not going to be necessarily shocked either.

This practice was common in Greece, and was common in Mesoamerica, as well as a few other cultures.

The job of the military, unfortunately, is not to impose our values, if this is indeed NOT a Colonial enterprise... then we did... and also created nations from whole cloth.

17. imposing our values??
Some things hurt and traumatize people deeply and the denial of those wounds affects how the culture behaves as adults.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Indeed, my conclusion from a lifetime of psychohistorical study of childhood and society is that the history of humanity is founded upon the abuse of children. Just as family therapists today find that child abuse often functions to hold families together as a way of solving their emotional problems, so, too, the routine assault of children has been society's most effective way of maintaining its collective emotional homeostasis. Most historical families once practiced infanticide, erotic beating and incest. Most states sacrificed and mutilated their children to relieve the guilt of adults. Even today, we continue to arrange the daily killing, maiming, molestation and starvation of children through our social, military and economic activities. I would like to summarize here some of the evidence I have found as to why child abuse has been humanity's most powerful and most successful ritual, why it has been the cause of war and social violence, and why the eradication of child abuse and neglect is the most important social task we face today.
be my guest.
Have a good day.
And having treated BOYS who were abused, as well as girls I get it. But you want to change that, you will have to kill every male in the country over 16... have fun.
5. Pashtun perverts...
I wish DESTRUCTION to THE PASHTUN PERVERTS!!!
I feel bad for the women,and boys to be living around such scumbag evil hearted and selfish males,who are mindlessly creating such trauma over and over. No wonder so much abuse happens there,(and we go over there and ADD to it). If this article is true,I must say ,I don't care if all older pashtun men with boys are wiped off the face of the planet.Pedophiles won't stop abusing kids,so they should be killed, every last one of them,male or female.Pieces of twisted pedo shit. Pedophiles disgust me,just because it is a culturally sanctioned abuse does not mean it is OK EVER..
19. No you don't
You have to create a place of emotional and physical safety for the kids to trust in,so they can remember what was done to them without fear, or denial and help them heal as they come to terms with the damage the culture of violence they grew up in does that excuses the kids abusers,than maybe eventually to understand why trauma via pedophilia is what destroys cultures. Nobody likes to be made a powerless object to be used,and through"discipline"until they are taught they have to accept it as a child or die before they grow up to be powerful "lords" and go to abuse other kids.It is abuse, denial and retaumatization driving the generational pedophiles in pashtun culture,I think.
"The main psychological mechanism that operates in all child abuse involves using children as what I have termed poison containers--receptacles into which adults project disowned parts of their psyches, so they can control these feelings in another body without danger to themselves. "Lloyd DeMause
Western culture is abuse driven too,with statistics like 1 in 4 girls are raped before age 18,we need to stop the violence against kids ,and stop the denial of child abuse over here too.
22. Back in the 1840's, explorer Sir Richard Burton went undercover in Karachi, Pakistan
to investigate this phenomena.
Subsequent rumors of his own homosexuality ruined his career. Possibly also because it turned out that many of the customers were British soldiers.
30. Since this goes back a few centuries then the men are also victims of pedophilia
Edited on Wed Sep-01-10 03:03 PM by lunatica
Where should the punishment start? The men who commit pedophilia now are the victims of it themselves, as are their elders who committed it on them who were victims too.
It's kind of shortsighted to consider punishing pedophiles in countries that have practiced it to such an extent that it is apparently done quite publicly and is a historic custom.
How are our soldiers with their Judeo/Christian/Puritan upbringing supposed to stop such activity? How does anyone stop it, including Afghanistan government? Who does one choose to hate? All men, including the young boys who will grow up to do the same? What is the cut off age between the victim and the abuser?
Considering all the rage on this thread I wonder if anyone has thought of just how national customs get started or how entrenched they are. As bad as it is, who is going to do anything about it? Who can do anything about it?
And that includes the treatment of girls and women. Does anyone think we're stopping it or are even capable of stopping it?
