Could the Republicans Have a Three-Way Split? |
|
Chances are it won't happen, but imagine that Rudy Giuliani wins the Republican nomination. Let's say that Chuck Hagel launches an independent or third-party bid (antiwar, "traditional conservative"). Then let's say that a prominent social conservative (maybe Tom Tancredo or a high-profile evangelical) launches a major pro-life (and maybe anti-immigration) independent bid.
It would almost certainly guarantee a Democratic victory. Something like 47% for the Democrat, 33% for the Republican, 15% for Hagel, and 4% for the pro-life bid.

All of this doesn't matter. In an Electoral College system he who controls the machines wins.

You actually believe the Republicans are a majority.
It doesn't matter if they run one candidate or twenty, honey. They smell. And no one wants to vote for garbage.

4. They'll have a two-way, but not a three-way split. |
|
Hagel is probably going to run Indy, AND he's socially conservative--there would be no need for an evangelical guy to run third-party. Plus the regular GOPer candidates are doing so much fundie ass-kissing, there's just no reason for anyone to break out on his own.
