Oh Good God look at this crap in Texas

AUSTIN – Christian conservatives are counting their legislative blessings, and they are bountiful.

A premarital education bill. A ban on mandatory human papillomavirus vaccines. Posting "In God We Trust" in the House and Senate chambers.

It would be a record legislative session even if it ended today, they say. And they've still got half a dozen other religious expression and anti-abortion bills with a good shot at becoming law – including legislation on when doctors can end a terminal patient's care and on adding "under God" to the Texas pledge of allegiance.

On Thursday, the House is slated to consider a contentious bill to force Texas physicians to submit reports to the state on each abortion they perform. A second abortion bill – one requiring women seeking the procedure to first get a sonogram – should be up for House debate by Monday.

1. Shit. I didn't need that tonight.
OTOH, my father who voted for the pretzel twice, now wishes there were such a thing in the U.S. as a Vote of No Confidence so we could get rid of the bastard. If Dad has been converted, hell hath truly frozen over and bush has reached an all-time low.

2. Can we please give Texas back to Mexico?
American settlers in Texas in the 1830s fought for independence from Mexico largely for the right to own slaves, which the Mexican government had outlawed in I think 1829. So since we now also have outlawed slavery, I think the appropriate thing to do is to give Texas back along with a nice note apologizing for the misunderstanding.

12. Texas Republic Now!
When President Clinton signed the assault weapons ban, my in-laws started talking about an old idea - Texas "seceding" to be an independent nation again. (Texas was a Republic when Sam Houston was its President.)

At first I laughed it off. Hadn't we already fought that war in the 1860's? Then I thought about it more.

It's a damn fine idea. A buffer state between the United States and Mexico.

Funny, when they elected one of their own (sort of) President, they stopped talking about it. Now that Bush's regime is coming to an end, it's time to talk this up AGAIN.

I can just see their state flag now -- a red and white star, in the middle of a black field.

27. Do NOT refer to Herr Decider as "one of our own"
I'm a native Texan, and we have enough homegrown psychotics and two-bit tyrants among us without you saddling us with this carpetbagger. Please, I'm begging y'all. There's still plenty of good Democrats down here in Texas who are doing their best to help everyone out.

as well as the Farmers Branch city council.

5. They won't even call themselves Republicans anymore
and the media gives them a pass and lets them call themselves "Christian Conservatives".
That is total BS.

7. What? Crap in Texas?
No! Surely you jest! The only reason I continue to live here is because I no longer have any contacts for acid, and Texas is the most surreal substitute I can find! :hippie:

9. You didn't miss the part where they defeated consideration of a VoterID bill did you ?
Edited on Thu May-17-07 12:18 AM by MazeRat7
I personally think that is a wee bit more significant. But then we all have our "buttons" ;)

13. So you are saying that women's rights are insignificant?
No wonder we are having to fight so hard--not only do we have to fight zealots, we also have to fight supposed progressives who are more than happy to jettison our rights.

15. DIdn't say that at all... show me the word "insignificant" in my post....
I said, I "personally" believed defeating consideration of a VoterID bill was a wee bit more significant... in that if you want to fight the zealots and get progress for all citizens of this state you need every possible vote.

14. Are these idiots still meeting every few months? Do they get paid
or just leech money off of the poor? Yup, that sounds about right. Stupid shit, our state leg is an embarrassment to representative government.

Just look at Governor Goodhair. Need I say more.

16. Here we fucking go again...
Remember this is the same state that produced great progressives like Molly Ivins. Remember bushie was born in CT. Everytime something happens negatively in Texas, you all want to disown us. Well there are those of us in this state working to set things right. I don't see you helping with this kind of shit talk. Did you hear about the defeat of the voter id bill and what how the dems pulled together to keep it from coming up for a vote? There was quite some fireworks on the legislation floor! Did you hear of the brave dems who left Texas before redistricting to prevent a quorum? God I hate when everyone starts talking shit about texas without offering to help.

17. I live here
and I personally think it is shitty that this is happening.
And fuck yeah I tried to help. I worked on two campaigns that lost because of the inbred slope-foreheaded assholes who voted these asshats back in power. DON'T lecture me. You have no moral standing.
This is pure shit. Put down the "Texas is great...ra ra ra" shit because it doesn't fucking work anymore.

23. I never said the "Texas is great" rah rah rah...
so don't lecture me either!

Remember it was the redistricting that put these clowns into office. Several districts are so diluted that it is damn near impossible to turn the state blue. Its because of Tom Delay and his interference with redistricting that is the source of the problem. I live around this asshats as well. Dont like it, move!

21. Don't take it personally.
Molly Ivins criticized the Texas Legislature all the time. I was born and bred here, and I don't take the criticism personally. If they give Texas back to Mexico, we won't have to pipe all our oil and gas to California!

24. I think they mean they want to disown the conservative portion
of Texas, but I cannot speak for them. Personally, one of my favorite dems of all time was a Texan: Ann Richards. Can't knock a state that gave us both Ann Richards and Willie Nelson.

Just a friendly reminder to let you know that we ALL don't feel that way about Texas. Texas has given us many great people over the years. Please keep your head up. :pals:

are starting to feel dejected after failures by the all-Republican government to repeal Roe, add intelligent design to school curriculums, and so on.
