American settlers in Texas in the 1830s fought for independence from Mexico largely for the right to own slaves, which the Mexican government had outlawed in I think 1829. So since we now also have outlawed slavery, I think the appropriate thing to do is to give Texas back along with a nice note apologizing for the misunderstanding.

When President Clinton signed the assault weapons ban, my in-laws started talking about an old idea - Texas "seceding" to be an independent nation again. (Texas was a Republic when Sam Houston was its President.)

At first I laughed it off. Hadn't we already fought that war in the 1860's? Then I thought about it more.

It's a damn fine idea. A buffer state between the United States and Mexico.

Funny, when they elected one of their own (sort of) President, they stopped talking about it. Now that Bush's regime is coming to an end, it's time to talk this up AGAIN.

I can just see their state flag now -- a red and white star, in the middle of a black field.

Remember it was the redistricting that put these clowns into office. Several districts are so diluted that it is damn near impossible to turn the state blue. of Texas, but I cannot speak for them. Personally, one of my favorite dems of all time was a Texan: Ann Richards. Can't knock a state that gave us both Ann Richards and Willie Nelson.
