Homeland security is being integrated into a bill that oversees our food supply.

After 9-11 this organization sprung up and the questionably security this country has had since it's inception makes me wonder why they are going to be implemented into over seeing our food supply. Here are some elements that have been discussed in the proposed bill S. 510

2. Too intrusive
into other areas where they have no business. I would love to see their new "mission" statement.

3. Former monsanto attorney is writing this bill.
Meet Michael R. Taylor, J.D., Deputy Commissioner for Foods

Michael R. Taylor was named deputy commissioner for foods at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in January 2010. He is the first individual to hold the position, which was created along with a new Office of Foods in August 2009.
Mr. Taylor is leading FDA efforts to
develop and carry out a prevention-based strategy for food safety
plan for new food safety legislation
ensure that food labels contain clear and accurate information on nutrition
"I am fully committed to working with my FDA colleagues to make the changes necessary to ensure the safety of America’s food supply from farm to table," said Mr. Taylor.
"We look forward to working in new ways within FDA and with partners in other government agencies, the consumer community, and the food industry to tackle the important challenges – and the unprecedented opportunities – we currently face."
Mr. Taylor received his law degree from the University of Virginia and his B.A. degree in political science from Davidson College.

His client list included Monsanto -- a chemical giant trying to get FDA, Taylor's old agency, to approve a genetically-engineered growth hormone called BGH. This synthetic hormone would be injected into cows to force more milk out of them. Problem is, not every parent wants their kids drinking milk spiced with antibiotics and extra hormones. But Monsanto, with Taylor's help, got FDA to go along. Now that their drug was approved, there was the testy matter of keeping consumers from knowing which carton contains Monsanto's Mystery Milk, since most folks don't want to buy it.http://www.jimhightower.com/node/2140

5. Monsanto came to mind immediately when I saw this thread.

7. We do not even need a Homeland Security Dept.
We cannot afford a Homeland Security Dept.

Just because Bush started it, doesn't mean it needs to be a permanent fixture in our nation.

Any dept created by Bush, which continues to attempt to gain more and more power, cannot be a good situation.

8. Sounds like they are asking the FDA to share info in case of
bio-terrorism to me..possible poisoning or viruses introduced into food supply since it is worldwide now...

I don't think it has anything to do with Monsanto...

9. what does the FDA know?
They have been allowing our food to be poisoned. They act as if they cannot do inspections anymore, they can only react after an outbreak or a major problem has been proven over the course of several years by their guinea pigs, the American people. How the hell are they going to help? They should all be fired as well

Companies like Monsanto pay to have their crap put in our food supply. The FDA has nothing to do with keeping us safe, only collecting their donations and shutting up naysayers.

10. It is being straightened out from the * years of willful
Edited on Wed Sep-01-10 08:50 PM by EC
neglect...the repubs changed the rules to self inspections by the corps and then told the inspectors to take a walk...many of the * rules did result in what you say including drugs, no more testing or regulation until problems in the general public have resulted...that's the way it was set up by the *ie's..That is why I refuse any meds that were approved after 2001, they aren't tested, we are the Guinna pigs they test on...

Why do you think all of a sudden in the * years there were so many problems with everything from lead in toys to seminilla in lettuce? Before * there was testing and inspectors (although during Reagan and *I there were alot fewer than with Clinton)

I agree monsanto is bad, but this has more to do with Homeland Security than Monsanto trying to get more money for genetic mutations...

11. I would like to agree, but I'm wondering if letting this attorney
that wrote the bill to put hormones into our milk products is concerned with protecting our food. It seems more like a case of fast tracking/sharing info. on food production that favors the monsanto way.
