Camel on A Stick at the Minnesota State Fair
Edited on Wed Sep-01-10 08:32 PM by MineralMan
Well, being the adventurous eater that I am, I couldn't resist the Camel on A Stick at the fair today. Disappointing, really. It tasted almost exactly like lean ground beef molded around the stick and cooked in a deep fat fryer. The mild sauce I chose had West African flavors, and that was very good, but the meat was so close to lean beef that I wonder if that wasn't substituted.

Camel meat, by the way, is available in some Halal markets and is imported from Australia, where a minor industry of raising camels as livestock is active. Camels were introduced into Australia as beasts of burden, but are now unwanted exotic species in that ecosystem.

I was very happy, though, with the Scotch Egg on A Stick, which quite lived up to my expectations. A horseradish sauce added to it.

If you are ever in Minnesota at the end of August or early September, I recommend a visit to the state fair. It's excellent.

1. I don't think there are enough foods on a stick.
I love me some Scotch Eggs. I'm jealous.

2. Oh, there are plenty of them at the Minnesota State Fair.
Everything is on a stick there. I try a couple of new ones every year. So far, I'm still alive.

3. I haven't been to a State Fair in over a decade....
Michigan--I was in Detroit because Tiger Stadium was closing--I was on the last public tour and took some warning track dirt home with me.

I had a corndog, and a chocolate bannana.

Clearly, I need to get to a State Fair and broaden my stick-cusine horizons.

6. Uff da! Not as far as I know.
Somehow, I think it might not be a big hit. However, there is a plate lunch booth at the fair. I didn't try it, but it looked pretty authentic. They also sell shave ice at the same booth. The Islands in Minnesota? What an idea.

4. I hear tell there was Salad-On-A-Stick at the Iowa State Fair this year
and they also had (on a stick) a Twinkie dipped in chocolate, then rolled in nuts and topped with whipped cream.

This was on the radio and I didn't catch the name of the latter.
I suspect it was "Twinkie On A Stick."

7. Yah...yummie. My wife had Hot Dish on a Stick last year.
Meatballs and Tater Tots alternating, battered and fried, with mushroom soup dipping sauce. I passed.

8. Ha. Next year they'll figure out how to incorporate green beans
somehow I bet.

I have partaken of Tater Tot Casserole more often than I want to remember, and have the hips to prove it.

11. Okay, it sounds vaguely naughty, but it's quite good---
Take a hard boiled egg and shell it.

Wrap in sausage. Lamb, if you can get it.

Roll in oatmeal that has been whirred in a blender.

Fry.

Eat it.

This tastes best after washing down many pints of newky brown.....
