SF Weekly:Best Talk Radio Host Bernie Ward
Best Talk Radio Host
Bernie Ward
KGO (810 AM)

OK, so the guy is not sexy or suave. He looks like a plump systems engineer from Middle America who'd vote Republican. But this is radio, so what do we care if KGO's Bernie Ward isn't a looker. If you can sit tight through sermon-like pauses (he used to be a priest) that last so long you end up tapping the radio to see if you lost the signal, you're in for a program where he lives up to his cheesy moniker "The Lion of the Left." On one show, he criticizes KGO's own Ronn Owens for "leading cheers and doing flip flops to get us into the war" in Iraq. In a debate on MSNBC last summer, he clobbered conservative talk show host Chris Baker over whether the government should be able to censor the press in wartime to the point that Baker disconnected his microphone and fled the set. Bernie is a dweeb, all right. But he packs a punch.

Alright, Bernie!

He's talking about it. Bernie's not shy.

1. I'll second that! I haven't
listened to him for awhile but he knows his stuff and ain't afraid to use it...I also used to enjoy Ray Taliaferro alot, but I don't stay up that late anymore.

Despite his voluminous knowledge, the one host I can't stand on KGO is Bill Wattenberg. Arrogance and condescension on full volume...seems like he has gotten worse over the years, too...I really can't listen to him for very long. I could listen to Taliaferro for hours.

Were you a KGO listener when Jim Eason was around, or was that before your time? He was a conservative (or, I should say, got pretty conservative as the years went on) but he was funny and had great guests and topics. He was really into the whole Kennedy assassination conspiracy thing...

:D

2. Ummm, Brother Bernie actually thinks during those sermon-like pauses...

he refuses to prattle on just to fill the airwaves. Nary a show goes by that I don't needlessly hit my snooze thingy to bring him back after one of his famous pauses. Nevertheless, He gets my vote - in spades.

His Sunday morning "Godtalk" program is also super! I've been listing to it for over twenty years, and am a charter member of the Church of the Holy Donut. Woo be the ignorant member of the religious white-wing that tries to take Brother Bernie to task. Nothing is better then lying in bed eating glazed donuts, drinking coffee, and reading the Sunday paper with Godtalk playing on a nice Sunday morning.
