4. I won't comment on the wisdom of Obama's comments on Bush.
He had every right to say it though.

10. Where is the bridge too far?
Is there any point beyond which the very faithful supporters will not go?

If he praises palin's dedication to the people of Alaska? If he invites dick cheney to a dinner to discuss war in Afghanistan because Obama says he is so knowledgeable?

If he declares a national donald rumsfeld day for celebrating patriotism?

I remember an old Gahan Wilson cartoon. People in strange robes were gathered around an empty pedestal, bowing and praying. One turns to another and asks the question I now ask. "Is nothing sacred?"

19. Why is this so shocking? After all, he admired Reagan as well.
Edited on Thu Sep-02-10 05:26 PM by RufusTFirefly

There are many reason progressives should admire Ronald Reagan, politically speaking. He realigned the country around his vision, he brought into power a new movement that created conservative change, and he was an extremely skilled politician. But that is not why Obama admires Reagan. Obama admires Reagan because he agrees with Reagan's basic frame that the 1960s and 1970s were full of 'excesses' and that government had grown large and unaccountable.

Those excesses, of course, were feminism, the consumer rights movement, the civil rights movement, the environmental movement, and the antiwar movement.
The libertarian anti-government ideology of an unaccountable large liberal government was designed by ideological conservatives to take advantage of the backlash against these 'excesses'.
