Fans Brawl At U.S. Open Fans descended on a young man at the U.S. Open yesterday after he argued with a woman seated near him. Watch what happens after the woman's elderly father comes to her defense. Huffington Post has the incident from another angle. Apparently it all started because the younger man was shouting obscenities at the players. (Links have video of the brawl.) and wondering what the commotion was all about.. the commentators were commenting that it looked like someone fell (musta been when the older man tumbled down a row or two there) and the game play stopped for a couple minutes. But there was no camera aiming up there so I was clueless.
Thanks for the links. The joemygod one has better audio so you can actually hear what a jackass that younger guy was... 'I got a lot of money on this match..' He musta been in the wrong because the audience was chanting 'throw the bum out!' LOL

16. What a bizarre interpretation of that video. |
|
Sometimes I think there really is some sort of alternate reality that people slip in an out of.
It's a thought I often have on DU when discussing videos like this. More often it's with cop defenders defending things like throwing suspects face first in to plate glass windows.
How anyone can see the young man get slapped, do nothing, try to dis-engage on at least two occasions, sit down, get struck again by the old man and attacked by the old man WHILE SEATED and THEN defend himself - not by punches, not by continuing the fight once the threat was handled - But he is the bad guy who through an old guy over the seats.
Bizarre.

The Joe.My.God video provides the best information because it includes audio.
You can't watch that video without seeing the man disengage by sitting down at least two times including when he was struck. He was stuck (the audio makes this very clear) by the old man WHILE SEATED.
Regarding the crowd: There's no doubt the young man wasn't popular with those seated around him. This is, no doubt, due to his big mouth. But pay attention to the comments of the guys making the video posted on Huffington - something to the affect "Dude, we got your back, you were jumped."
I was going to go back and edit my post to give you the benefit of the doubt because some of the other videos weren't as clear how things unfolded ... but if you are going to tell me, after watching the Joe.My.God video, that old man didn't waddle over and strike that young man AFTER things had pretty much settled down and he had taken his seat, I have nothing further to say to you.
Good day.

7. No matter what the young guy was saying, he DID NOT escalate the event. The woman |
|
physically assaulted him first (the slap). He responded in a BS macho way, but did not hit back! Even after he sat down, that couple kept going at him. The old man further escalated it by kicking and then attacking him physically, again. They were in the wrong, even more than his verbal behavior. I hope he sues them for a ton. With the video evidence, he should win.

They're all idiots but the video indicates that both the woman and the older man escalated the encounter at two separate points.
Interesting that some of the fans, most of the security and some DUers perceived it the other way around.

Young dude was an arrogant foul loudmouth. We stopped going to certain games with our kids because the behavior was so awful. She shouldn't have slapped him though. Security needs to control out of control people at public events.
I can't believe the comments people posted-"hottie" was ill used. "Fat bitch" should get sued. We are becoming a nation of shallow, vulgar, no class trash.

There's little doubt the young man was being a jerk.
I don't even doubt the other people's right to ask/tell him to shut up - But when it became very clear he had no intention of granting their wish they should have disengaged and contacted security who would have ask him to tone it down or leave.
On a similar note: I wonder what goes on in that family that it's OK for the woman to strike that guy and not have her father attempt to restrain her. Instead, he escalates the attack after it appeared to have settled down and/or the woman was leaving the seat - presumably to get security.
I would be curious to see what went on in her home-life that violence is so easily resorted to AND encouraged by the father.
I hope there are no kids/grandkids.

The young guy - Yelling obscenities at that type of event. It's not a football game, different culture.
The woman - BIG no no for hitting the guy. I do not believe in hitting women, but on the flip side women shouldn't be taking advantage of the fact that men aren't supposed to hit them.
The old man - For initiating a physical altercation with a young man. If he broke his hip it would be his own fault.
I watched closely and the young guy did NOT hit the woman or the old man. In fact, the old man is who caused the two of them to fall.

|
Edited on Sat Sep-04-10 07:40 AM by aikoaiko
If the mouthy guy was yelling obscentities, then security should have been there.
Security most definitely should have intervened as all three parties started to argue, but I know why they weren't. This is NY and scenes like that play out all the time without physical incident. This is why his friend is just kicking back between them. I used to chuckle as I watched these scenes play our on the lower east side.
The old guy initiated the physical assault, lost his balance and pulled the mouthy guy down the chairs. If someone did that to me, I would start beating the person who sent me tumbling couldn't move. Instead the mouthy guy just gets up and walks away in disbelief. Then the daughter starts to slap him around and he pushes her away and steps back. Very reasonable if you ask me.
The mouthy guy was mouthy and should have been addressed by security, but apparently security was not interested in becoming involved. I would have asked him to keep it down and if it persisted then ask security.
All three should be banned from the US Open for life.
