Banned: Mobile calls while Bush in Sydney
Source: Australian Associated Press
Mobile phone calls in Sydney's CBD will be blocked by a sophisticated counter-terrorism measure to prevent bomb attacks during US President George Bush's September APEC visit.

The president's motorcade will be shadowed by a helicopter equipped with signal-jamming equipment, News Limited newspapers reported.

...It is expected mobile phone calls will drop out in an area the size of a football field as the helicopter passes overhead.

1. Refresh my memory...
When is the last time a U.S. President needed such security measures in a country usually thought to be one of our closest allies?

Hmmm...

NEVER?!?!

7. Did he actually win the last election? My daughter's friends yet to find anyone who voted for him.
Gee, with right wingers winning elections in so many of the world's leading democracies, and people so opposed to them, could there be vote fraud around the world?

Global Corporations working on installing puppet pols that will pass laws that will allow for corporate global domination. Could they also manage some global vote fraud? Wonder if they would do such a thing....

Same guys who will put poisons in wheat products and toothpaste to save a buck on manufacturing costs so they can reap a bit more profit per unit sold? Oh, I think they are up to taking over governments around the world to advance their profits.

3. Anyone know if our troops have that capability in Iraq?
Or is that another one of those..."you go to war without the signal jamming you want" sort of things?

16. It's clear that Israeli troops have that technology and had it in Lebanon
but I was wondering about US troops in Iraq, a perusal of the page at the link missed any indication of US forces.

8. How is this fool going to survive after he leaves office?
He has to travel with an army to protect him now and lives in a fortress, for that is what the People's House has become. What the hell is he going to do when he cannot hide behind the power of the office he stole?

15. No, Clinton was the last to get lifetime. They changed it in 1996 so that
presidents after Clinton only have 10 years.

9. This sounds like The Silmarillion
Ungoliant Gloomweaver* entered the world clad in darkness, perhaps when Morgoth first looked upon it with a darkened mind, and there she took the form of a many-eyed spider. She hated everything, and most of everything she hated light, yet light was what she most longed for. Trapped in her own webs of darkness Morgoth found her and made a pact with her: If she helped him strike against the Valar, he would give her all she desired.

The great spider wove a cloak of Unlight around them so they could not be seen, and they went to Valinor clad in secret. There Morgoth stabbed the two trees of light and let Ungoliant suck their light out and fill them with poison. From all this light she grew larger and darker than she had ever been, so that even Morgoth was scared of her. Hidden in a cloud of dark smoke they fled north, and Ungoliant demanded what he had promised her. She wanted all the jewels he had stolen in Valinor. He let her devour them all, except three, the most magnificent of them all: The Silmarils. Refused those gems of light Ungoliant assailed the Dark Lord with all her might, but he called out and his serving Balrogs came to his rescue.

13. So the bomb(s) will be triggered by the jammer instead?
So the bomb(s) will be triggered by the jammer instead?

Well, maybe not this time. Maybe this time the terraists
are just collecting the electronic signature of the jammer
for use next time.

But I'm constantly amazed at how little imagination our
anti-terrorism credit their enemy with. If they think
that cell phones are the only way to trigger IEDs,
they're not thinking at all.
