26. Before he died, he had often stated, in words that would not
make it into the media, what he thought of the current GOP. I was everything from a "bunch of fools" right down to "shitheads".

While I did not agree w/Goldwater on a much of anything, there is no doubt he was a true Conservative. He mellowed out after retirement, but he was still a force to behold. I lived in AZ before he died, and he was quite the character. You could often find him out taking pictures and making small talk w/locals. I met him at an air-show in Kingman AZ, and he was quite the affable person. We talked a few minutes about aircraft, just as one of the few Navy Corsairs still in the air did a grand loop. He seemed happy we didn't talk about anything political. He, as was I, (I was in the aerospace field at the time), were incredulous that a B-29 was parked on the tarmac, you don't see things like that every day.

In any case, seeing that Goldwater despised what Reagan was doing, made me VERY happy. He would truly be appalled if he knew what was going on today.

Look what somebody posted on beloved (puke) :puke: Barry! (But I must admit, I could tolerate him)

Reference:

Now that Dick is Away, Top Reps. Wont Play, Bush Getʼs Nixon Treatment
May 10 (EIRNS) - Eleven Republican Members of Congress met Tuesday May 8 with Bush, Rove, Hadley, Rice, Gates and others at the White House, just after Cheney left town, to read Bush the riot act on the Iraq War. They reportedly told Bush that there will be no Republican Party left if he doesn't get the hell out of that mess. The delegation, led by Cong. Mark Kirk (Ill.) and Charlie Dent (Pa.), also included Fred Upton (Mich.), Mike Castle (Del.), Tom Davis (Va.), Todd Platts (Pa.), Jim Ramstad (Minn.), Jo Ann Emerson (Mo.), Jim Gerlach (Pa.), Jim Walsh (N.Y.), and Ray LaHood (Ill.).

Tim Russert of NBC reported, on a leak from the Republicans, that the members told the President (in Russert's words), "The word about the war and its progress cannot come from the White House or even you, Mr. President. There is no longer any credibility. It has to come from Gen. Petraeus." MSNBC commentators on Wednesday evening compared this meeting (while admitting it did not have the same intense import) to the 1974 meeting of Senators Hugh Scott and Barry Goldwater at the

White House with Richard Nixon, to tell him the jig was up on Watergate.
