31. We're showing our age |
|
http://snltranscripts.jt.org/79/79fupdate.phtmlAl Franken: Thank you, Jane. Well, the "me" decade is almost over, and good riddance, and far as I'm concerned. The 70's were simply 10 years of people thinking of nothing but themselves. No wonder we were unable to get together and solve any of the many serious problems facing our nation. Oh sure, some people did do some positive things in the 70's - like jogging - but always for the wrong reasons, for their own selfish, personal benefit. Well, I believe the 80's are gonna have to be different. I think that people are going to stop thinking about themselves, and start thinking about me, Al Franken. That's right. I believe we're entering what I like to call the Al Franken Decade. Oh, for me, Al Franken, the 80's will be pretty much the same as the 70's. I'll still be thinking of me, Al Franken. But for you, you'll be thinking more about how things affect me, Al Franken. When you see a news report, you'll be thinking, "I wonder what Al Franken thinks about this thing?", "I wonder how this inflation thing is hurting Al Franken?" And you women will be thinking, "What can I wear that will please Al Franken?", or "What can I not wear?" You know, I know a lot of you out there are thinking, "Why Al Franken?" Well, because I thought of it, and I'm on TV, so I've already gotten the jump on you. So, I say let's leave behind the fragmented, selfish 70's, and go into the 80's with a unity and purpose. That's what I think. I'm Al Franken. Jane?
Jane Curtin: Thank you, Al. That's the news. Good night, and have a pleasant tomorrow.

10. My only problem with that ticket is that we loose 4 very important people in key positions |
|
Grayson and DK from the house, Franken from the senate (a VERY important seat, it's a pity we lost Hilary THB from the senate) and john Stewart from the daily show.
As nice as it is to think about, that is too much liberalism for america (see an op i made today to see my point).
They would actually get LESS done than is being done now, im afraid, because they gop would polarize, even bringing in the tea baggers into line against the dems.
Dream ticket? yes!
reality ticket? sadly no

|
Edited on Sat Sep-04-10 09:41 AM by TBF
this is the problem with democrats. Piss poor negotiators.
If republicans came up with their own dream team (can you imagine it?) they would NEVER say "that is too much bat-shit crazy for America" - rather they would say "here's who we are running".
Democrats are too subservient in every single way.

coming from the right, as the system stands, it would be considered acceptable... tea party anyone?
But my main point stands...
We can't afford to loose all those great people from the jobs they are currently serving!

we can't sell anything if we damage it by saying "it's too liberal"

57. trust me, i WANT the kind of ticket that the OP mentions |
|
but it's not possible because the people have been poisoned!
The stats point out that most well educated people are liberals, most ill-educated people are republicans.
The airwaves are owned by the conservatives.
I also agree that if obama had kept his campaign promises as stated they'd be far more liberal.\
the REALITY, is that there are only pockets of liberalism in the country.
Where are you from anyway?
I'm from the SF Bay area, and trust me, California has a very strong conservative streak.
prop 8 is only one example, another is prop 13, and if CALIFORNIA has that many conservatives, how many do you think the REST of the country has?
Lets be serious for a minute, as much as i'd LOVE a DK/Franken ticket, it can't happen!
Better that we work harder to get more liberals in congress than the top of the ticket, and be realistic about what we can achieve, as opposed to having our heads in the clouds.
LONG term thinking is one thing, but fantasy will get us nowhere!
after all that's how come the Reich wing is where they are now, long term thinking for power (we look long term for other things... which one is right?)

41. Colbert should be press secretary |
|
Let's face it, the job is propaganda, not truth-telling, even if it's for a good cause. Stewart's all about reacting as a human being to the disgraces in the news, and that's not what anyone really needs from their press person. Colbert is all about telling a story and riding it into the ground if need be. He'd deliver all the truthiness the administration would need!
