16. Sadly, must agree. I've lost count of the number of stories I've read from previous times ...

... that feature putting that unwanted litter of kittens in a gunny sack and tossing them in the river. The practice goes back centuries (those cats will breed you off your own farm) and no doubt continued right up to the time that low-cost neutering and spaying became commonly available.

The RSPCA and the ASPCA did pioneering work in raising awareness about cruelty to all sorts of animals, and changing ingrained cultural habits, but that was in England and the US. Ten years ago I made friends with an American woman living in Spain who was working very hard to bring about those sorts of changes in Spain -- right then, not a century ago. She was really appalled at the way they treated stray cats, and changing Spanish behavior/attitudes toward Spain's cats became her special mission in life.

As much as we turn our own cats and dogs into furry children, we should try to recognize that elsewhere, in other cultures, this is not the case. That's not to excuse the abuse of puppies and kittens -- it's to say that sometimes we in the US need to get off our righteous soapboxes and see who else lives in this world before we start asking for this young woman's head on a platter.

The Internet/YouTube constitutes a bizarre simulacrum of real life.
