For modern times, at least. That's when it became cool again to hate the most vulnerable in our society, and they haven't stopped since. Look how many conservative policies are based on exaggerating the corruption in programs for the poor (or ignoring them - like homelessness), and boosting programs (loopholes) that are easily exploited by the wealthy? Pretty much all of them since the welfare queen was invented.

And now for the rest of the story: A 1968 Cadillac that cost someone $500, and has old motheaten seats, runs on five cylinders (Cadillacs from 1968 had V-8s) and has bald tires, a broken window and one headlight burned out is not a grand luxury sedan, it's an old shitbox that needs to be taken off the road before it kills someone. But ya know, "cheap" and "runs most of the time" are all that matters when you have no money and need to get to work.

Metaphors aside, that's the somewhat unspoken meaning of the whole honor rally thing. We all need to become more pious, which translates to everybody being more respectful of authority - something I find rather dangerous.

Perhaps "honor" existed on VE day, when we had defeated Hitler and liberated the concentration camps. But then, those folks knew of sacrifice toward a common goal, paid their taxes as a matter of pride, donated more through war bonds to support the troops, rationed food, tires, and gasoline, created social security, worked together to build good free public schools, libraries, public parks, and interstate highways, still they lived in a sharply and legally segregated society. There was some honor there, but it was not without warts, for soon from this time sprouted Joe McCarthy and the House UnAmerican Activities Committee, Korea, Vietnam, the Cold War, Richard Nixon, and the war on drugs.

Of course to Beckerheads the notion of shared sacrifice toward a common goal, and rationing food and proudly paying taxes to do it, having strong unions, supporting very high taxes on the rich, working together to build good public schools, and creating social security, would perhaps all seem a tad socialist.

Heading back in time from there, segregation gets worse, lynchings become more common, child labor laws disappear, as well as the minimum wage and paid holidays and the 5 day work week, women lose the right to vote or hold property, robber barons arise, economic recessions and depressions become more frequent, hunger and poverty more common, black people become property, and people who do not own land lose their right to vote.

It is important to remember when we lionize the founders, that while there were many things admirable about them, Washington and Jefferson owned slaves.

Like Reagan's efforts to "restore Main St. USA", it is important to consider whether the time and place ever existed, outside the Magic Kingdom at Disneyworld.

There is a reasonable argument to be had to suggest that we as a nation are more honorable now, seen as a whole, than we have ever been before.
