This is a Fox link..not because Fox deserves to be linked in DU..but because we need to be aware of the large picture.

Edit to add to the body of this op why this is so important.. I understand not wanting to sign into links

Congressional Redistricting, the Ultimate Political Prize

Monday, November 26, 2007
By Martin Frost

Every so often an important political issue flies "under the radar screen."

In other words, it's not considered important enough for the national press to spend any time covering it. A perfect example is the next round of redistricting scheduled for 2011.

This is the ultimate political contest, with all the chips on the table. And the contest is already in progress, the national press notwithstanding.

4. Wow. Fox News actually printed some truth?
Republicans basically said to the African American community, “we will give you one or two sure things but at the same time we will vastly dilute your influence in many of the remaining districts.”

This was cynicism at its height. Democrats, on the other hand, have stood for racial justice and maximizing minority influence.

Who would have ever expected Fox News to admit something like this?

5. Heads up
Thanks for the reminder to keep our eyes on the ball... the radical right strategy will of course not be televised!!

Democrats have to be skilled at 3 level chess too: Being current on relevant local/national and international issues---while always showing up at the polls!

6. Yeah Tom Delay got to redistrict Texas twice and no body
stopped him. Once is the law. But you know Texass they do what they want. He found in his first re-districting he didn't phase out enough Democratic areas. So he went back and made sure that the republicans ruled every district.

11. That is just plain scary..
Locally this types of moves will ensure that Iowa loses ground on some very important steps that we have taken forward.

7. Anyone concered about the balance of Congress needs to be involved in state level races this year.
It's essential. People who only like to focus on national issues need to suck it up and realize that state level politics will determine who wins at the Congressional level.

13. We could guarantee a Democratic Congressional majority for the next 10 years
just by controlling the process in a few large states.

14. Michelle Bachmann will be guaranteed a platform
to spew her hatred for as long as she wants.. or we will have the numbers to redistrict her.

These elections on the state level are huge

I think we're losing sight of that, and as the saying goes, history is made by those who show up.
