"This Won't Be Easy for GOP." Front Page, Above the Fold Sunday Los Angeles Times
How pleasant it was this morning to see some actual reporting on the upcoming mid-terms in November that illuminates some interesting facts on the front page of the Sunday Los Angeles times. I can not find an on-line link, but here are some stats that might give you some heart:

1.) the Democrats have $69 MIllion of hard cash in hand and compared to the GOP's $49 Million

2,) the Democratic National Party Committee has $11 Million compared to the GOP's $5 Million

3.) the Democrats House Campaign Committee has $36 Million compared to the GOP's House Campaign's $22 Million

4.) the Democrats Senate Campaign Committee has $22 Million to compared to the GOP's Senate Campaign of $21 Million.

This thing isn't over. Don't buy into the mantra. Keep these 5 things in mind:

1.) Yes, the public may be weary and disappointed with the Democrats, but polling clearly shows that Americans do KNOW and do REMEMBER that it was George Bush and the Republican Party that caused the banking collapse, that started the two wars, that oversaw the unprecedented rise in interest rates that strangled the economy, that oversaw the foreclosure nightmare and that stewarded the current recession and unemployment situation.

2.) And keep in mind that the American voters fired the Republicans in two consecutive election cycles (a lot of credit of which goes to Howard Dean, by the way). That's a trend and trends don't change easily.

3.) Just because Americans are unhappy with Democrats' progress does not translate into the American people trusting the GOP.

4.) The Republicans have nominated some truly crazy and scary politicians this cycle because of the teabagger movement. Not just crazy and scary to us, but to the average American.

5.) And finally, President Obama slew John McCain by a nearly 10 million vote margin nationally.

So, while this is going to be a touch election cycle and we can not allow the GOP to get control of the Senate or the House and thereby control the committees and the subpoena powers that come with it, this is not going to be a cake walk for the Republicans either.

1. Just like the old days....except reversed.
The Repubs always had more money than the Democrats. And Democrats still won.

2. But not reversed in that we are still a majority party of registered voters.
We always had the majority of registered voters, the GOP always had the money.

We still have the majority of registered voters, and we now have the money.

5. Republicans were in control of House/Senate/and Presidency for a long time
because they could outspend Democrats.

Currently the Republicans have neither money or ideas. They win buy working to lower voter rurnout. Keep Dems home by saying the Republican gains are inevitable. Teabags will be out in full force no matter what.

7. You nailed it: the GOP wins by "working to lower voter turnout."
We should not fall into that trap. Well said, emulatorioo

8. Even more important is the nuts factor

The Republicans have gone to demogogory without even an attempt to provide a governing alternative.

If people are scared they will go with the known that they trust rather than the nuts they suspect.

13. I see this the same way, grantcart.
There's the old adage in politics that:

1.) You have to convince the voter to change

2.) You have to convince the voter that you are that change.

That's the GOP's hard climb, convincing Americans to trust them again.

That said, as emulatorloo pointed out upthread, the Republicans must lower the voter turn out and it's time that we all recognize that whether our Democratic control of Congress depends on some corporate whores, then our own self-righteousness needs to be put into perspective. The alternative of a GOP controlled Congress will be the end of any glimmer of hope we have at keeping this a government of the people.

And by the way, :hi:

10. Party coffers pale in comparison to
the funds that will be spent by the "corpo-persons" whose wallets were magically opened by the SCOTUS Five in the Citizens United decision. To me, that's where the real danger is; Rove's "American Crossroads" is just the tip of a massive influx of funds from many such right-wing deep pockets. Money has completely corrupted the political process and I see no way that the political operatives of either major party will shut it off. They have zero concern for us...only power counts. Fuck them all; they are despicable beings.

From whom did they get it, and what do they owe in return?

19. And the Democratic party is pursuing many previous GOP policies...
so if the real Republicans have any sense at all they'll switch to the Democratic party since it is becoming the new conservative force in Washington.

The so-called Republican party has become the party of fantastical hysteria and blind, blubber-brained blowhards. Not much left there for a real conservative to latch on to.

Doesn't leave much of anywhere for us liberals to go but what the hell, ya can't have anything. (Like a political party that supports your views.)
