5 tips to teachers for a great school year!
Tip #1: Make sure you work at a great school. I can't tell you how many "newbies" overlook this one...

Tip #2: Make sure you have a great principal. Now you might think this goes along with the first tip, but it doesn't always...So how do you know whether the great school you've chosen to work at has a great leader? Simple! On the first day of school, walk right into the teachers' cafeteria and say in your cheeriest voice, "Hey, our principal is the greatest guy ever!"

Tip #3: Made sure you have the best students. This is crucial. Just because you're in a great school with great leadership doesn't mean you have the best kids. You're going to be evaluated on the performance of your students, so you need to make sure you have only the best. Hop on over to ARIS and check to see how your prospective students did on the ELA and math exams last year. If their scores don't meet your expectations, be sure to speak up! March into your principal's office and say in a calm but assertive voice, "Hey, Mr. Principal! Did you even look at the drek rosters you gave me? How's about some smart kids? I mean, this is my career we're talking about here!"

Tip #4: Use your preps wisely... Lesson planning is a bore and will rarely help you advance, so make up your mind to spend those precious periods acting as a liaison for your principal. To do this, spend as much time as you can with your peers and listen to what they say. You'll be amazed at the things you'll hear. Then bring those tidbits to your principal. He (or she) will surely appreciate it and reward you next year with the best classes (see tip #3).

Tip #5: Ignore the latest trends.... For example, the bestseller "Teach Like an Olympic Javelin Thrower" tells you to "stand next to students who are talking inappropriately and they will soon get the message." Yes, they sure will--the message that you're the enemy! Inner city teachers can be shot for breaking up conversations... If you followed Tip #1, for example, your chances of getting shot for any reason are greatly reduced.

11. Why would you say they be my musing?

And if not mine, but many peoples, then is it really possible to say they are not relevant?

And why would you say it to me?

And they support progressive causes also.

Over and over, they do such things.

Although you probably have not read all the post so do not see the story.

13. By definition a musing comes from outside a person.
You can only say it is my musings if you say I am muse.

Is that what you are saying.

And for who?

You actually make a point, I should have specified 'irrelevant for me' in my irrelevant comments.

But can you say what is irrelevant, or are you saying you responding would be irrelevant.

4. A friend of mine who taught in Ocala, Flori-DUH told me all about #2 and #4.
Edited on Sun Sep-05-10 08:22 PM by Odin2005
The principal was an ass with a cadre of sycophantic "informants" that gave him sexual favors as well. Teachers that were not willing informants and did not give him sexual favors were harassed and "disciplined".

The principal was a Cuban-American guy with a big misogynistic Latin-American machismo streak.

6. Teachers "harassed and disciplined"? How could this be?
I thought teachers' unions are so powerful that it's impossible to "discipline and harass" even lazy and incompetent teachers. And you're saying that even productive teachers are regularly harassed and disciplined.

Will I NEVER get this straight in my head?

14. You had me until the last sentence
Was the last sentence really necessary?
Did you have to just add a dash of racism?
Yes, there are some Latino men who are very "machismo", but there are also white, black, Asian, and every fucking culture in the world men who are a-holes.

and hell, women, too.

25. Actually, according to her, that guy was mostly European in appearance.
"Hispanic" is a culture, not a race.

26. Actually
“Hispanic” is neither a race nor a culture. It encompasses many cultures. Btw, why are we putting quotes around “Hispanic”?
By saying that “Hispanic” is not a race, are you saying that it is not possible to be racist against people of “Hispanic” origin?
Because I’ll let the Latino population of Arizona know...

Also, mostly European in appearance? What do his looks have to do with your bringing up the fact that he's Cuban-American as a reason for his "machismo"?

bottom line, you did not have to bring the culture/race/ethnicity/national origin etc. of the person in question in mind.
It was insulting my culture/race/ethnicity/national origin, etc.

good day.

10. Yes, yes!
It is obvious that so many of the petty complaints teachers make come from a real lack of career planning.

I hope I don't have to point out the obvious irony and implicit sarcasm in both the OP and mine.

23. How's this one
it was a comment posted on the local newspaper's website after an education article. A teacher said he/she worked 60 hours a week - teaching, grading, planning, etc.

Well it's too bad that you're inefficient and can't get your work done during the school day.

Great use of the title of one of the sillier innovations in education.
