Dublin, Ga. mayor to sign law fining people with baggy pants
Edited on Sun Sep-05-10 08:47 PM by alp227
Mayor Phil Best of Dublin, Georgia will sign a law this week that imposes fines up to $200 for people caught wearing baggy pants, specifically "pants or skirts 'more than three inches below the top of the hips exposing the skin or undergarments.'"

CNN reported (link earlier) that a court threw out a similar law in Riviera Beach, Florida. (more from local paper) So this is pretty much the right not to be offended vs. the right to dress as you please. Whose rights are more important this time? I'd say that if people want to wear baggy pants they should do so only within their own little social cliques or places where you aren't expected to dress really nice like a nightclub or bar. The baggy pants wearers should dress nicer in a place like library, bookstore, or restaurant.

1. I wonder if that law would include wearing cargo pants?
I mean, my ass and undies are covered just fine, but they are baggy pants. I might just need to make a note to myself if I ever visit the rest of the country to stay the fuck out of that little burg. What a stupid fucking law.

9. If I pulled out my old bellbottoms* and headed out into public...
...I think a law would be demanded.

*(size 29 btw, not going to happen)

16. Damn! Why couldn't someone have made a law banning bell bottoms.
I recoil when I see myself in those. My parents even bought me those hideous things!

ARRGGHHH!

5. Are we fashion nannies, now?
Yes, it's a hideous, stupid look, but as long as all the naughty bits are covered, what business is it of the city to mandate how people should dress? What do you mean by "dressing nicer" ("more nicely," to be correct) in libraries, bookstores and restaurants? Why can't I look like a slob in a library? More importantly, can the city require me not to look like a slob in a library?

That's just stupid.

8. Looking forward to another stupid law being thrown out.
While I think it looks stupid, nonetheless this law will never stand in court. Who the hell is going to go around measuring these folks?? Don't they have some real crimes to fight?

13. The residents of Dublin are probably among the loudest opponents
of "too many laws already" - like safe drinking water laws, OSHA regulations, etc. But no one will ask them about this hypocrisy
