FEDS: Use fans and ventilation when showering or washing clothes avoid risk of explosion.
Oh yeah...and don't drink the water....

http://www.pbs.org/wnet/need-to-know/environment/feds-warn-residents-near-wyoming-gas-drilling-sites-not-to-drink-their-water/3338/

The announcement accompanied results from a second round of testing and analysis in the town of Pavillion by Superfund investigators for the Environmental Protection Agency. Researchers found benzene, metals, naphthalene, phenols and methane in wells and in groundwater. They also confirmed the presence of other compounds that they had tentatively identified last summer and that may be linked to drilling activities.

Last week it became clear to us that the information that we had gathered was going to potentially result in a hazard result in a recommendation to some of you that you not continue to drink your water, Martin Hestmark, deputy assistant regional administrator for ecosystems protection and remediation with the EPA in Denver, told a crowd of about 100 gathered at a community center in Pavillion Tuesday night. We understand the gravity of that.

Representatives of the EPA and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, which made the health recommendation, said they had not determined the cause of the contamination and said it was too early to tell whether gas drilling was to blame. In addition to contaminants related to oil and gas, the agency detected pesticides in some wells, and significant levels of nitrates in one sample signs that agricultural pollution could be partly to blame. The EPAs final report on Pavillions water is expected early next year.

4. Reminds me of a (perhaps local) saying.
Well, Shit Fire and Piss Gasoline

Which would make the answer to your question a definite NO.

11. Sorry, bad joke with an obviously region phrase.
Sometimes when old timers are surprised in the South they will exclaim: Well, shit fire and piss kerosene!
Obviously this would be a surprising event, with not so surprising consequences.

I was playing on that idea to suggest that doing so in the shower would....be a bad idea.

That is why America is so interesting. We are like a lot of countries in one big landmass, that considers itself one country with one culture.

3. PBS doesn't use the key word here: 'FRACKING'. Click through to this LINK
from the URL in the OP--

http://www.propublica.org/article/epa-chemicals-found-in-wyo.-drinking-water-might-be-from-fracking-825 --

and you'll see the problems in Pavillion are likely the result of Dubya's 2005 exemption of gas drillers from the Clean Water Act:

"EPA: Chemicals Found in Wyo. Drinking Water Might Be From Fracking

by Abrahm Lustgarten, ProPublica, Aug. 25, 2009

Federal environment officials investigating drinking water contamination near the ranching town of Pavillion, Wyo., have found that at least three water wells contain a chemical used in the natural gas drilling process of hydraulic fracturing. ... The study, which is being conducted under the Environmental Protection Agencys Superfund program, is the first time the EPA has undertaken its own water analysis in response to complaints of contamination in drilling areas, and it could be pivotal in the national debate over the role of natural gas in Americas energy policy.

Abundant gas reserves are being aggressively developed in 31 states, including New York and Pennsylvania. Congress is mulling a bill that aims to protect those water resources from hydraulic fracturing, the process in which fluids and sand are injected under high pressure to break up rock and release gas. But the industry says environmental regulation is unnecessary because it is impossible for fracturing fluids to reach underground water supplies and no such case has ever been proven. ..."

5. Figures. NPR has been bought and paid for by the corporate bigwigs......
Edited on Sun Sep-05-10 10:39 PM by BrklynLiberal
They call them "partners", but once they are paid by the corporatocracy, they are a puppet of the corporatocracy.
How many "energy" corporations are their "partners"?

Just the fact that Juan Williams now reports for them tells me all I have to know.

6. They did link to a less cryptic account of the fine print in the "Pickens Plan"
You have to give them credit for that.

Reread the last sentence of the snippet in Reply #3:

"... no such case has ever been proven."

I thought it was a curse word in Battlestar Galactica.

8. Have any Republican pols aligned themselves with T Boone Pickens' plan to
maximize natural gas production?

If so, IMO they've opened themselves up to attack on the strongest of environmental grounds--severe water problems like those you describe are not limited to Wyoming.
