Source: Daily Mail

A founding member of ELO has been killed following a freak accident involving a giant bale of hay.

Mike Edwards, 62, who played cello for the band for three years, died when the giant bale weighing 50 stone crashed down on top of his van.

Mr Edwards died instantly in the accident after the bale careered down the hill, and flipped over a hedge. . .

2. Abolish round bales.
Remember when hay bales were rectangular cubes that could be hoisted by brute force? I'll bet those never killed anybody.

Sad freak accident.

5. I'll bet you could finds instances.
Kids used to build forts inside stacks of square bales. From experience they were always caving in.

This would have never happened in New Orleans.

8. For the stone-impaired ...
50 Stone X 14 pounds = 700 pounds (Or maybe just too stoned ...)

How interesting though; Trajan just two days ago walked through a Fry's Electronics and stopped to sit and watch an ELO concert on a big screen display, recorded sometime in the late 70's at Wembley Stadium ... It had been years since I have seen or heard any ELO performances ... I enjoyed it immensely ...

This sucks in many ways .... RIP Sir ...

33. Our round bales at one time were 1400 pounds, big suckers
Edited on Mon Sep-06-10 10:38 AM by DeschutesRiver
Round bales are popular out here, but not as much - now usually 700-1000 pound square bales are the most easily available, in our case for feeding our cows.

What was nice about them is that because of the round shape (and smaller surface compared to a large flat square bale), rain would more likely run off them than find its way inside. With the squares, we needed something to cover them in the field because they don't shed rain as well; the rain sits on top and finds its way down through the bale and makes them moldy in time. Tarps are expensive and the wind tears at them and rearranges the tarp, and building a hay shed with just a roof means time and money. That said, dh found some scrap materials here and build a lean-to onto his machine shop for the big squares last year.

But yeah, you wouldn't want to be near one of these 1400# suckers if it was free rolling down a hill.

14. very very sad, but at the same time
I feel like I landed in the middle of the Mary Tyler Moore show when Chuckles the Clown was dressed as a somebody Peanut and was crushed to death by an elephant at the circus. And Murray said, "Good thing he wasn't dressed as Billy Banana or he might've been peeled to death."

Rolled over by a runaway roundbale. What a headline...

RIP and godspeed.

17. A roll in the hay can kill you
He joins the club of odd ends.

http://www.neatorama.com/2007/03/12/30-strangest-deaths-in-history/

In 1999, Betty Stobbs, 67, of Durham, England, took a bale of hay to feed her flock of sheep on the back of her motorcycle.

Apparently, the sheep were very hungry. About forty of them rushed the hay and knocked her off a cliff into a 100-feet deep quarry. Stobbs survived the fall only to be killed when the motorcycle, which was also knocked off the cliff, tumbled down after her.

28. I love ELO, but even if I hated them I would be pissed about some of these comments.
So, is it cool for us to make similar quips if they post in grief about the untimely death of one of their loved ones?

36. Ummm...yeah
Because the family members of a famous British musician are going to visit an American partisan political board looking for condolences. The odds that they've even heard of DU are next to zero. The odds that they visit are even smaller.

It's the sentiments in and of themselves.

But whatever.
