The gas we found was right around $1 (Canadian) per liter. Since there are about 3.8 liters to the gallon and the Canadian dollar is worth about $0.98 US right now, that worked out to about $3.80 a gallon.

Per wiki:

"Canada

Fuel taxes in Canada can vary greatly between locales. On average, about one-third of the total price of gas at the pump is tax. Excise taxes on gasoline and diesel are collected both federal and provincial governments, as well as by some select municipalities (Montreal, Vancouver, and Victoria); with combined excise taxes varying from 16.2 ¢/L (73.6 ¢/imperial gal; 61.2 ¢/US gal) in the Yukon to 30.5 ¢/L ($1.386/imperial gal; $1.153/US gal) in Vancouver. As well, the federal government and some provincial governments (Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Quebec) collect sales tax (GST and PST) on top of the retail price and the excise taxes.

United States
April 2009

Fuel taxes in the United States vary by state. For the first quarter of 2009, the mean state gasoline tax is 27.2 cents per US gallon, plus 18.4 cents per US gallon federal tax making the total 45.6 cents per US gallon (12.0 ¢/L).

Interesting in that Canada is an oil exporting country and its people are just as "spread out" as Americans geographically, yet they have higher gas taxes than we do.

1. Ahhhh but their taxes aren't funding 700 military bases around the
world to keep them safe. Their taxes help pay for universal healthcare.

11. It is a harsh regressive tax even if alternatives exist
It is designed to push poor people into public transportation while making sure the rich have access to cars. Positive policy aims don't make it any less regressive.

No they aren't. Canada's population is clustered near the border and is served quite well by a highway and rail network that is simply a line across the southern part of their country.
